Drop calls still with iPhone 4

I just got my new iPhone 4 today and test it out with my old 3GS. I still have drop calls plus my 3GS has more bars than the new iPhone 4. *** can Apple and AT&T fix this problem. They both had 3 years to fix this problem. Does anybody else have this problem.

iMac 27 i7, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 16G iPhone 4, 32G iPad 3G+WiFi

i took my iphone 4 back about a week ago.

maybe some of you want to believe that it's the software or something that causes the dropped calls, but for me there was an obvious correlation between losing signal strength and gripping the outside of the phone. i even tried touching it in different places, with different fingers, with gloves on, etc. i concluded that it's not your skin or touch that causes the signal drop, it's the amount of pressure applied to (just about anywhere) the antenna.

in every scenario, i would go from 5 bars to 0 bars within 30 seconds. went back to my iphone 3G and the problem obviously went away.

Well I don't know the legitimacy of Mac Beep's claim, but I did go to the store because I was fed up with it not getting/keeping service, my face hanging up on calls, dropped calls, etc. Of course the Apple store rep, at two different locations, said I was probably in a bad reception area...yada..yada...and never admitted to any issues with the phone and where shocked that I had them.

Nevertheless I demanded a replacement after the 14 year old at the genius bar told me to set my phone up as new and it would fix the problems. I didn't buy that argument.

They gave me a new phone and I have to say that I have not been below five bars yet and I've even tried the "death grip" that caused my old iphone 4 to lose service. It seems to be fine, as of now, and hopefully they did secretly fix something. But I'm still skeptical and will see if the new iphone 4 I have will continue to be way better than my old one.

I'm glad to hear that you persisted at the store and am interested to know if you have any future problems with the phone. I could not afford any more downtime nor was I willing to be distracted by phone issues any longer. I am more than happy staying with my 3gs for a while longer but find it interesting to hear about how many people suffered exactly the same symptoms as I did while others are only slightly affected.

Mac Beep was probably right about the return but for me this only underscores the fact that Apple business practices seem to be totally marketing driven and suffering from the quality management side of the business. You can only profit from hype and flash for a period of time until the public gets fed up and moves along to a more reliable manufacturer.

Overall, there are clearly design flaws accompanied by manufacturing as well as software flaws in this round of IPhones.

I've been following all of the iPhone 4 stuff since I got mine the day before release. I was able to replicate the signal issue. I also had the proximity sensor issue, causing inadvertent mute button pushing. There were a few other software issues I was experiencing so I consulted Apple at the Fifth Avenue store in New York. They replaced my phone. The diagnostic showed that the OS was corrupt and certain utilities were failing. [They claimed that] all phones with a proximity sensor issue were being sent back to Apple for further study.

Well, when I got the new phone it was different. It was different hardware. The black [plastic] bezel isn't as black on the new one. I couldn't see the proximity sensor at all on the previous iPhone 4, now I can. The stainless steel band on the new phone is less 'steel-y' and more matte. I've also tried to replicate the signal drop and failure. While I can't say for sure that it is entirely fixed, there is certainly huge improvement. I'm guessing they coated the steel with something, took some black out of the bezel and sent them out without saying too much about it. I also think Apple is willing to warranty a phone for any reason except the signal issue.

The guy next to me said that he had to press the home button several times before the phone would come back from stand-by. This happened once. The Apple tech ran the diagnostic, everything was fine. They still replaced his phone. I think they're doing a 'silent recall'.

I am also having this problem! I called apple support about this and they said it was an issue with my phone and that they have only had one similar call about the issue. An on top of that it did while i was on the phone with them.... TWICE! and the second time i some how managed to three-way a call.
This is really irritating and apple knows that they are in the wrong.
They said that i could replace my phone for a new one... oh but wait i would first have to ship my phone into apple to get my new one. Or the can cross ship the phone but have to put a $599.00 credit hole on my card!!! My last options going to an apple store or att retail. but none of them are going to have the iphone for 14day!

Apple I have been a very long and loyal friend. I have to say I am really disappointed in what you are doing. You know the consumers that feed your company.
And on my last note. I am back to having my reception issue.. you know what they said... your holding it wrong.... Not acceptable.. second thing that they said. buy a case. All the current ones that i can get a hold of suck. And were in the commitments of buy this phone say that "you must also buy a case if you want it to work the way it should." And what if i like it just the way it is and i have two screen protectors on it? Then looks like I have to make a sacrifice for a product that i paid for to get to work 100%.

APPLE THIS IS A HUGE FAILURE FOR YOU. AND I DO BELIEVE YOU HAVE LOST ME AS A LONG TIME LOYAL CUSTOMER!

Thank You,
Corey

Do you honestly believe they read these threads? To say that Apple is arrogant is an understatement. If they screwed up the design, -- they should provide the skin for free. It probably costs them $1 to make/ buy. To tell customers that they are holding the phone wrong ... well... I'm glad I'm using something other than iPhone for the phone. My apple products are limited to iPod, and that, too, is the last mac I will ever pay for.
