I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).
My 2 family members and I are also having this problem. When we are on a call, our faces are muting the call and making new calls to people.
I really hope Apple can fix this with a software update by making the sensor more sensitive or something. I may end up returning all 3 phones before the 30 day return policy is up.
I doubt that Apple is going to respond and let us know what is going on with this issue. It appears that Apple does not value their loyal customers. The silence says it all. By making no statement about the proximity sensor issue Apple is making a clear statement to all of us.
Apple just like the banks. You are not to big to fail either. Apple please let your loyal customers know what is going on. We beg you for information. Or does your silence say it all and we are screwed?
I am also experiencing it. It took me a while to realise I wasn't going crazy and the calls kept ending, last night I typed an email to someone (it was very garbled!) when I thought I was talking to my partner - turns out the call had cut off quite quickly into the conversation - I had wondered why he was being so quiet!
I hope Apple acknowledges this issue immediately. At the moment, I LOVE my iPhone but this is a major function of a phone...so if it doesn't get fixed I will be getting rid!
Though I have experienced drop calls due to the antenna band issue, the proximity sensor is the one that I find the true issue for me. I've found my self terminating a call to dial someone else, accidentally muting someone, etc. In two years of iPhone 3G use, never had any of those issues.
I have the same problem. I went to the Apple Store and they told me that I will have to learn to hold my phone differently. Seriously?! I know how to hold a phone. This is embarrassing and frustrating. The other day I was on the phone with my bank and was disconnected twice (had to go back through the menus) and then muted, and the person on the other end thought I hung up so they hung up. There goes my minutes!
I'm having the issue, too. This is much worse to me than the bumper issue. I'm not having that issue, as service here is awesome.
But, every other call I'm having mute/hold/dial issues. Even when I consciously try to NOT do it, it still somehow happens with no contact with my face. Very frustrating.
Apple, what is wrong with you? Why are you doing this to yourself. I don't understand this at all. You are destroying 15 years of struggle back to the top in 15 days. Did something happen to Mr Jobs when he had his surgery? This is not the Apple or Jobs that I have been watching for the last 15 years. Not at all. This is disgraceful. This is the flagship product. What is going on? No comment or anything on the proximity subject? That press release regarding the antenna was awful. Didn't anybody there think somebody was probably going to test the phone after the press release? ?????

Now as I already explained earlier here the recall and redesing becomes obviuose .
After over 24 hours of calls 3 visits to the Apple store 5 different iPhone senior advisers they actually swapped my phone. Not only did I have the proximity sensor issue my phone thought it was 1970.Today I have a new phone which I pray does not have any of the issues with the other because I simply don't want to experience the extremely poor and at times in the apple store quite rude and ignorant. There is still the big issue of the signal.Which sadly still does affect me.I have to simply put it had a torrid time with apple over the past couple of weeks.
