Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I'm glad your issues seem to be resolved, but I and many, many others are having proximity sensor problems with either no case on the phone or a case that is designed for iPhone 4. I have an Incipio case that's designed for the iPhone 4, and I can replicate the proximity sensor problem with said case on or off.

Just wanted to add another voice. I've owned the 3gs and 1st gen and am very disappointed at the lack of response from Apple. I cannot make it through a call without disconnecting, trying to initate FaceTime, or playing music unless i hold the phone VERY carefully.

Trying to connect to Apple support took me 5 calls before i gave up and called from my house phone.

I'm glad I found this thread. I got my iphone from preorder and have had nothing but issues with it MUTING or going to SPEAKERPHONE or activating Facetime while i'm in a call. I've tried multiple ways of holding the phone but it still activates the touch screen during a call. Is there any fix for this?

This is my first Apple purchase and it looks like this will also be my last. I jumped blindly onto the Apple bandwagon thinking they would tested this phone before launching it...obviously I was mistaken. Between the call interruptions and the ridiculous reception/holding issue this phone should be recalled.

IMO, don't look for apple to fix this problem for quite some time. Even if it is a software fix, and even if it is relatively simple, they can't afford to admit that there is another big issue with the 4. They're already reeling from the antenna problem and resulting Consumer Reports snub; adding another huge problem would be too much to handle. They'll fix this - in a few months, without ever admitting it was an issue to begin with, and with no announcement that the fix is out. Mr. Jobs: a little bit of humble pie NEVER hurt anyone......

Here's another Apple loyal guy (first Mac in 1984) having the &$*#^&% proximity sensor problems. Noticed it the first longer call I made the day I got the phone a week ago. Then again two days later. Ever since.

Think is has something to do with the duration of the call. It never does it initially when I am "testing" it.

Tried reset.
Tried hard reset.

Will see how it works.

Interestingly I noticed on another thread somewhere that once you've connected the call (outgoing or incoming) press Home button that takes away the speakerphone, mute, facetime options. Think that may be a band-aid fix.

Lamprey,

TrentP figured out why longer calls experience the issue more frequently. Its because the sensor has a faulty memory. It first reads at over an inch, but then seems to take a second reading once it has been pushed against your face. With the new distance set, even the slightest movement of the phone will enable the screen again.
