I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).
Having the same problem. No bumper. I did a test and held the phone to my ear then slowly angled the speaker away from my ear while keeping the mic on my cheek. Only got 3/4" away when the phone turned back on. This is a problem.
I am having the same issue with my iPhone 4. On a call I either hangup, mute or one time initiated another call with on a call while walking down the street. I have tried the reset all settings issue without any positive results. I just hope this is an issue that can be resolved with a software fix.
I'm not using a bumper or any kind of case. Resetting all settings does not seem to have corrected this issue. My phone is behaving similarly to the one mentioned above where even just rocking it without taking it away from my ear is enough to reactivate the screen.
If you look very carefully about a 1/4 inch above the earphone port you can see the outline of the proximity sensor. I placed a call, then experimented with holding my thumb above the sensor to see when the display blanks - on my phone at about 3/4 to 1 inch away the display blanks.
Seems about right to me, I have also not had any issues during calls.
I too have suffered the proximity sensor issue and returned the phone to Apple Regent Street. They hadn't heard of the problem, and gave me a new phone... which - once I'd restored from the backup - exhibited the same problem.
Have tried the 'Reset All Settings' route and will report back. Shouldn't take long as I've muted 6 people and dialled someone with my ear during the last 5 hours... lol.
I've had the same issue. I will use the phone next to my face and then the Facetime feature will activate, putting the user on speaker phone. This is very strange. I never had this issue with my iPhone 3G.
I think this is not so much a defect as it is a change. Previous models without the front facing camera have allowed people to hold the phone in the general vicinity of their ear, but now since the front camera is located where the old sensors were you need to keep your ear directly over the ear speaker.
My dad told me about the same problem as reported in this thread but i confirmed his sensor is working by moving my finger by in and away. It just seems like there is a lot less leeway now for triggering it. I've been making a conscious effort to keep my ear directly over the ear speaker and I haven't had one issue yet. I know for a fact he always holds his phone very loose and even angled away from his head just because he's always doing about 15 other things at the same time as talking.
Maybe Apple can adjust the "pulling away" aspect of the sensor to have a short delay before reactivating the screen.
