iPhone 4 periodically won't wake up

Since I activated my new phone last night, it will periodically not wake up from being locked. When I try to wake the phone up from sleep mode, I hit the home button/lock button and nothing happens. Only a hard reset seems to fix the issue, and only temporarily; it happens again 30 minutes to an hour later.

I synced the new phone from my 3G backup. I'm thinking a full restore may help -- any other ideas?

yes any wierd software issues are from backups.

Remember backups contain system settings

Try restoring as NEW and resync apps / music / contacts back on iphone

when goin frrom software versions its better to sync than restore from backup.

Everything was perfect with my new iphone 4 until this morning and then I had to do a hard reset to get the new phone working. It refuses to wake up from sleep mode. Had to do 6 hard resets throughout the day and finally restored the phone. Problem has started again. Seems like most folks on this thread are backing up from 3G phones as is the case with me. I've made two appointments at the Genius Bar but then it seems to work and I cancel. For sure going tomorrow.

UPDATE: I flattened my "4" and restored to a clean image and I've had no recurrence of this problem. Again, I originally restored from a 3G so that may have been part of the issue with the new hardware. I'm spreading the word to others who are taking the easy route from an earlier iPhone - just do clean setup and don't restore your legacy stuff.

AGREED -

It just hit me. I have had my phone replaced twice already... 🙂

*1st time:* dead microphone - hardware issue
*2nd time:* massive dead pixel splotch on the replacement phone
(interesting note: they have a complete inventory of replacement phones, which are all brand new)

I am on phone #3, and it's doing the coma thing. Responds to powerbutton+homebutton for 10 seconds. But I had phone #1 all day yesterday and it never once did anything unbecoming.

I would say that it is the backup... I've had the same backup since iPhone 2G so I bet there's some weird incompatibility with old backups.

Anyone else agree? We should file a bug. Besides, I don't want to have to trudge to the apple store again.

Picked up my phone at AT&T store, they unlocked it on a computer in the back room and proceeded to transfer my 3GS info when a problem caused the clerk to have to call AT&T for help.activating my phone. I was in a hurry and told her I would load it at home. Set it up as a new phone, loaded about 8 gigs of apps, pics and movies. I must say that i've not experienced any of the maladies listed on these boards. I just knocked on wood.

Unfortunately I have the same problem. I originally restored my iPhone 4 from a 3.(something) backup. The phone had worked great but curiously went into this coma state in the morning. After excluding ghosts in my house messing with my phone after soft reseting it and leaving it sitting while getting ready for work only to have it happen again, I called apple. They didn't seem to have heard of this problem (hadn't read this discussion board) and suggested doing a full restore from scratch. After a full restore and redoing all my organized folders again it has happened again.

My problem seems to happen after the phone has sat "inactive" for a period of time. I have had it happen after I have closed down any app that was running. I haven't tried turning off wifi.

It appears that I will need to exchange this phone. Since I had this shipped to me is there a way I can go to the store and exchange it for a new one there? I would like to avoid the throngs of people still trying to get this phone. I would also like to avoid a July 14th ship date as this is quite frustrating even for a faithful follower of everything apple.

Maybe I can blame ATT for this and try it in airplane mode ... no cell service.

This happened to me three times yesterday. I was able to get it awake again by plugging it into a power source. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to force my iPhone into a coma since last night. The only thing I can think of that may have made my iPhone freak out was that it was about to dip to 20% battery capacity; my initial thought was that it was somehow crashing while trying to connect to Wi-Fi but this thread seems to have ruled that out. The three comas also happened within a timespan of one hour; it's been fine ever since then.

I was lucky enough to have been using my iPhone right before the second coma and I noticed that for some reason I couldn't access any sites through Safari even though I was connected to the 3G network. The 3G icon disappeared, and then either the AT&T logo or the signal bars (or both) disappeared. Cue frozen/comatose iPhone.

I was thinking about giving it a week before going to the Genius Bar. I may just have to set it up as a new phone if the problem occurs again today.
