Signal issues? You're holding the phone wrong.

In case the Apple support forums are your first stop on your search for why your signal is dropping when you hold your phone, Steve Jobs and Apple consider it a "non issue" and to "avoid holding in that way".

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

I agree totally, I dont want a cover as my Iphones arent exposed to the enviroment as much as other users have theirs, but if Apples only response to this fix is a rubber/plastic band round the phone I do not believe it is lawfal to make us pay for it. You cannot release a product into the market then charge people to fix it or not use it in the manner that is advertised as.

I know its not extreme as the Honda issue, but Takeo Fukui could not have just turned around and said dont drive it that way when the public identified the issue.

If true, Steve Jobs response to this design flaw is an insult to all those people who purchase his company’s products! We have spent weeks eagerly awaiting the phone, spend hours waiting in line outside a shop and handed over £600 for the privilege of picking up the most expensive (non) phone on the planet!!

I have tested the phone in a very good reception area, no problems at all to areas where there are only 3/4 bars of signal. These later cases have seen 3 dropped calls so far and when I put my sim into my old 3G and make the same calls there are no problems at all.

As for the advice to not hold the phone at the bottom has he ever tried holding the phone at the top and tried swivelling this thumb down onto the home button.

Utter disgrace

Same here. I dont like cases but for them to make me buy a case in order not to lose reception is a joke. I took a half a day off of work yesturday, stood outside a mall from 4am to 9am to get this phone and now I have to buy your stupid bumper for $30 even though it doesent even protect the front or back glass. Did anyone even notice that they had no other option for the phone besides their bumper. Oh yes I will be returning this phone(crap)after work today. They have officially pushed me to the competition(Android)and I have loved Iphones since "07"

This is the one iPhone I'd not use without a case or at least the Bumper; too much glass to break and I find it hard to get a secure grip on it. Plus of a case is that it protects the back from spills when I lay it face down on a table; plus of Bumper is that it exposes the maximum amount of the phone to view (it is beautiful) while still providing a good grip. Either has the plus of keeping the front or back raised above any flat surface you lay it on.

There are numerous articles and videos out there about similar issues with other phones when in the hand (incl. the 3G). For me this is not a deal breaker and the strident emotion I see expressed is really surprising.

While I am disappointed with this issue, I have to agree with this sentiment. I had originally intended to keep it naked and buy a bumper just to have a little fun with it. When this issue cropped upit bugged me that I couldn't grip the phone like I was accustomed to. However, the phone is incredible so I really didn't want to return it. So, I tried out an aftermarket 3rd-party case (the rubbery smoke-tinted one) and I like it a lot. I find I'm not so self conscious with the back anymore now that the glass is covered. It feels sturdier and I feel more confident handling it and setting it down on a table. When I get the bumper (it is on order) I will try that out as well and see if I like it, but either way it's not going to be a deal breaker for me, I'll just keep it cased. And if Apple issues some kind of recall due to the hardware, I will take them up on it.

Sorry, but I can't resist myself. Steve, I recall you saying, that every Apple product is revolutionary and other crap like this. I don't know about you, but my HTC HD2 doesn't have any signal issues. It's a pity, because i really like the looks of the new iPhone and seriously thought about getting it, when Apple seemed to learn from stupid things like the lack of multitasking. But now I see, that it's just the same arrogant Steve Jobs. With problems such as this, I just can't move over things like the iPhone still lacking a SD card slot (without this, the phone definitely complicates my life but I agree, it's a pretty specific demand - I don't need tons of integrated memory, I need an exchangeable one) or micro USB. These are things that I consider a standard for a 2010 smartphone. HTC HD2 has all these things (including nice capacitive display and materials) and it has been released almost a year ago. It also lets me use a software of my choosing for uploading things, that is definitely more comfortable than iTunes which I would rate as the least intuitive software I have ever seen.

Well had mine a few hours and already managed to get the fault and yes it is a design fault. I find it difficult to believe this wasn't identified in testing before release?

It's not so much that v1.0 of any technology has faults, it's the fact that Apple always handle issues such as this so badly. Complete denial is always the response, anything to avoid damaging their legendary reputation for design.

If, as Steve Jobs now informs us that we're holding the phone the wrong way, why isn't there any guidance on how to hold the phone correctly supplied by Apple? Why do numerous Apple adverts show the phone being held incorrectly?

Big fail this, both with a serious design flaw causing the primary function of the iphone namely being a phone to be unsuable for many customers and a typically arrogant response from Apple.
