Signal issues? You're holding the phone wrong.

In case the Apple support forums are your first stop on your search for why your signal is dropping when you hold your phone, Steve Jobs and Apple consider it a "non issue" and to "avoid holding in that way".

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

LOL! OK, so they forgot to add the reception bar fix they added last time for the 3G antenna flaw! Thats pretty funny actually.

The software fix that is coming which Applecare is talking about is most likely the same cosmetic "bar boost" used to hide this issue. Its obviously a physical issue and no software can ever stop your hand from blocking the antenna.

So this is an old complaint that got more legs this go round because of all the iPhone 4 hype. If we lived with it then, Im sure we will all live with it now--especially after we get all those pretty bars back! 🙂

I had the 3G for two years and NEVER had this problem. When I got the new phone yesterday, I had seen this issue discussed on the blogosphere, but couldn't believe it was really as bad as they said - it is! This morning, I was reduced to sitting with a paper towel around the edges of the phone in order to maintain a signal, and no, it doesn't matter, Steve, how I hold it. Left corner, right corner, either side, I can watch the bars drop from 5 to 0. I'll put a bumper on when any of my 3 Apple stores or the 5 AT&T stores I checked with today get them BACK IN STOCK (another nice move, Apple), and I do love the phone, but Apple really needs to step up on this one, admit they rushed this thing out, and send all of us a free bumper - I mean how difficult would it have been to put a plastic strip around the antenna (oh yeah, that might have interfered with the fact it's "the most beautiful piece of technology ever". Not a huge fan of Apple right now.

I just got back from the apple store to try and get my phone fixed. They know that is a problem and while I was there we were able to get ALL of the display phones to drop down to 1 bar at the most and they have a 3G repeater in the store. EVERY iphone 4 has this problem it is the way they were built. Anyway, I started a case and they took down my serial number and I was told that I should wait a week or so to see if they can find a work around.
