Keyboard arrow keys close the screen saver

Previously, when my screen saver was going with photos, I was able to go forward or backward through the photos if I wished by using the keyboard left and right arrow keys. Now, they just close the screen saver. A new bug or "feature" in the latest Mojave update?

@martinfromhuddersfield

Thanks a lot for trying it out.

Yes, this is a real bummer: since Mojave , it is no longer possible for third-party screensavers to access the photos stored in the Photos app. I have researched and tried a lot of things, to no avail.

(Note, this limitation only applies to 3rd party screensavers, not to regular apps, and, of course, not to Apple's own screensavers.)

Please request Apple to bring this feature back (for 3rd party screensavers).

In the meantime, what you can do is:

export all the photos from Photos.app to a separate, regular folder; then point ArtSaver to that folder.

I sent my feedback in about the arrow keys in the screensaver. Thanks for the link.

Anyone else have internet applications frequently losing their connection? My wifi shows it is happy and active but pandora and facebook and others frequently freeze and I usually have to restart the browser a time or two before it reconnects. Both of these things started when i upgraded to Mojave 10.14.2. I mentioned that in a separate report to apple.

Gabrielz, I did install art saver , and it worked on my mojave iMac , but only using one folder - I couldn't get it to recognise the whole Photos. then when I was trying to add folders it seized up my screen and I could not get the display and screensaver box away - had to shut down. I am nervous of reinstalling it in case it clashes with something in the OS system.

One of the talking points in 1984 when Apple came out with the Macintosh, and I’m paraphrasing, was ‘people no longer have to learn to use computers, we’ve taught the computer to understand people.’ The programmers at Apple are making us go back to before the birth of the Macintosh and it’s a **** shame. Apple is in a sad downward spiral, I see no need to trade in my iMac or iPhone of a few years ago for new ones, and I’m seriously considering buying cheaper and better competitors.

We have 5 Mac owners in our family and EVERYONE wants the arrow-key-screen-saver to work again !!

Also, we'd like you to add these "new" features ASAP:

  • Allow us to see the filename of each photo as it is displayed (so we can find and edit them)
  • Allow random photos from ALL in the Photos app (currently it just shows a small subset of our 100,000+ photos)
  • Allow random videos to be played on the Screen-Saver (currently it only shows photos, not videos)

Wow - glad to see I'm not the only out there. Since I upgraded to Mojave 2 weeks ago, I have not been able to utilize this functionality and that is disappointing because I used to love that feature. Going thru photos at your own pace is really great and I'm surprised Apple missed this with the new OS. After all, they keep pushing for me to upgrade but when I lose things like this, it makes me just want to stay where I was.

Apple will be calling me tomorrow (phone appt) and I will be voicing my opinion on this takeaway.

Why don't they respond? Everyone seems to feel the same way! Bring back arrow control of picture screen saver!

Apple does not generally participate in these user to user forums. They do not respond to feedback. (As a side note, who is "everyone"? A dozen or so is not everyone). Their engineering team may or may not consider making changes; however, serious bugs are addressed first, not so serious bugs second, etc, etc. UI requests would not be considered top priority and would be considered down the road (if at all).
