Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Thank you.

This post solved the issue. Basically delete .../System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

See detail here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250021459

What is interesting, iTunes updated automatically updated which is not good. My preferances are set for me to approve updates, but this latest iTunes did not respect the pref.s. Not good Apple.

So now my iTunes auto updated to 12.8.1.2 ergo this ridiculous waste of time and giving advantage to Chrome and Firefox for people who are as savvy or have time to go this support board.

Thanks Eric.

You are welcome. El Capitan doesn't require 64 bit applications. Apple is still working on that. If you have a mid 2010 MBP, you can upgrade to Sierra/High Sierra.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

macOS 10.12/10.13 (Sierra/High Sierra) requires one of the following Macs:

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or later)  Model 6.2 and higher

How to get macOS High Sierra

Sierra download

You can try to download it at the link below. If it won't let you, then your only options are to upgrade to Sierra/High Sierra/Mojave or find an older computer where you can download it using your Apple ID.

El Capitan

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. .

macOS Sierra 10.12: Compatible Apps

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

Eric Root.

You seem to be quite an astute support person. Question to you and I’ve posted this issue on the other link you shared prior. Any thoughts on this one?

<<Related question and anyone else having this issue?

So now that this Safari issue is solved, when iTunes is launched (see my other comment on this post - updated without my approval), my iPhone and iPad won't show in iTunes. I did not want iTunes updated let alone Mac OS b/c Apple is locking us out and forcing us to buy new (iMHO). Sounds like a great class action lawsuit to me.

Any hope now because I think this update has made my devices obsolete. I have tons of music on my MBP that I want to get to my devices.

You are correct. Apple just released iTunes update to fix the Safari screw up 12.8.1.3.

Separate question. How would one go about upgrading to an appropriate OS for this mac, but making sure it will not toast the hardware?

I've checked compatible software-ok there.

Ive heard that64bit is required for El Cap?

And where on earth can one find a copy of El Capitan?

Thanks

I posted links on how to get the various OS versions above, to include El Capitan.

I went back to my source for model numbers and the 15" MacBook Pro is model 6.2. The same year 17" MacBook Pro is model 6.1 as you posted. If you want to upgrade to Sierra or High Sierra, I would try the links above to see if you can download it. It may work. If the App Store tells you it is incompatible, then download El Capitan.
