Apple mail and Gmail warning be careful with this message

Some of my email recipients get a warning when I send email from gmail through Apple mail:

"Be careful with this message. Gmail could not verify that it actually came from firstname.lastname@gmail.com..." Two options are given -report spam or report phishing.

My gmail has worked flawlessly for years and this is a recent problem that was reported to me after I installed Mojave.

I reconfigured my IMAP outbox on my iMac. I somehow managed to get to the google page which allowed me to "accept unsafe applications" - apparently Google deems Apple mail unsafe. I accepted. The result was that the message still appears especially for recipients through a wordpress mailing list (but also direct emails to them). The reconfiguration now screwed up the Apple mail on my phone, meaning it doesn't sync with my computer anymore.

The google instructions are not very clear and ask to search for "email client's help centre" for further advice. I could not find any in Apple support either. Please can anyone help?

Hello KatonMac,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that your recipients are receiving a warning message from Gmail saying that they cannot verify that the email actually came from you. The following link from Gmail Help, may be very useful to you and your recipients in resolving this issue:

I have already gone through all these steps in this Google support link that you sent, a couple of times, and the warning still shows. "Use the table below to update your client with the correct information. For help updating your settings, search your email client's Help Center for instructions on setting up IMAP." This I understand to refer to the Apple Mail Help Center.

My recipients have gotten this warning only for messages that I have sent to a recipient list hosted on our website provider, likely using wordpress. I found the following link for that in particular: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/gmail-phising-warning-be-careful-with-this-message/ I am not that advanced a wordpress user, so I would like to know if there is anything that I can do?
