Unable to to enter password for gmail in settings on new iphone XS when prompted

The gmail app won't work on my new iphone XS. I share an apple account with my husband, his is working fine on his new phone. I've tried deleting the app and re-installing the latest version but it won't let me set up email. I get a message stating to enter password in settings, but when I go to settings and click on gmail I get the following message:

"There was a problem accessing your account. Please re-enter the password for ......................."

But when I click on re-enter password it try's to open but its just a blank screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?

There are 2 ways to get gmail on an iPhone, using the built-in mail app or using Google's gmail app.

If it's the gmail app you need to work with Google on the problem. You can try deleting the app, restarting your phone (Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support) and adding it back. You should be doing all of the settings in the gmail app itself, not Settings/Passwords & Accounts.

If you want to use Apple's mail app rather than the gmail app and you have 2 factor authentication enabled for your Google ID you may need to generate an application-specific password for the account. You set it up using Settings/Passwords & Accounts.

BTW, you should not share an Apple ID with anyone, not even your husband. Nothing to do with privacy; it's simply that Apple IDs are intended by Apple to be personal, and things will break if you share an ID.
