Generic RAM usage question

My equipment:

macOS Mojave 10.14.2

MacBook Air 2018

*I'm new to Mac so please be easy in understanding & as simple as possible please, thank you in advance.

My question:

Is it normal for the largest RAM usage (I have the 16GB version) to be the: kernel_task

it is using approximately 300MB & 160 threads in a week old brand new Mac. I have Safari & the activity monitor running. That's it, nothing in the background. (except McAfee Total Protection, side note please do NOT knock an antivirus program unless you know it's 110% worse than having nothing. I moved from a Windows PC & anything is susceptible)

I guess what I'm saying is; is this normal? I'm currently using approximately 4.50GB of RAM total.

MacBook Air (2018 or later)

Yes, it is normal for Kernel Task to use as much RAM as it needs.
