Problem with Mail not being able to recognize my Earthlink POP accounts and get my mail.

Mail will not recognize my Earthlink POP accounts and download the mail. I'm running 10.5. My password IS CORRECT. The Apple Support Verification download says my POP account is an IMAP account and all the settings are different for it than for a POP account. I use the "set automatically" feature. It's not working.

Delete the account, then add it back. After filling in the 1st screen, hold down the option/alt key while clicking Continue. Fill in the necessary information, then click continue until all screens are filled in.

I did delete the account and re-did it with Connection Doctor open and working. I could see it immediately made the connection and began downloading a LOT of back emails! I didn't do the option key routine because I hadn't yet seen your response. yet. My email account with earthlink has always been a POP account if I download mail to my Mail client on my computer. It has only been an IMAP account when I go online and view my emails via Earthlink's WebMail option. Thank you for the post and the help. Do you have any idea WHY the problem was fixed with a delete and re-do, and why an IMAP account works for both functions for me now?
