XR screen scratches easily

I have had my XR for 1 week. I ordered a screen protector and between the time I got the phone and installed the screen protector, I noticed small surface scratches. I am EXTREMELY careful of my phone. I did not carry it in my pocket until I got the case and screen protector. I left the plastic protector that the phone was delivered with until it finally fell off after a few days. This is my 4th iPhone and I must say I have never seen the glass scratch so easily. Quality issues? The new Apple? Anyone else notice the diminished durability?

Yes, this is very similar what happened to my XR. I brought it home and was going to put the screen protector on it when my 10 year old (who was obviously very excited to see the new phone) took it in his hand and put my iPhone 6s Plus on top of it to compare the size. And lo and behold - a scratch (a significant one at that) appears on the XR screen out of thin air.

Extremely disappointed in the quality - I have been carrying around my iPhone 6s Plus forever without a screen protector and there are no scratches on the screen whatsoever.

Very very disappointed in the quality control (if there is any to begin with) for this phone.

The same happened to me! I have had several iPhone's and did not really care for the screen protector since I am very careful with my phones. Having XR for a month, I already have 2 scratches, one deep and the other one very small. I don't even know how it happened. I am very disappointed with the quality! if you don't have an iPhone insurance, you would have to pay $200 to fix it. The phone is not cheap to start with and there is no support from Apple on this manufacturing error.. will not buy it again!!!!

This is my first Iphone in a long time. I've had all android phones until getting the Xr. I've had screws and tools in my pocket with some of my android phones and not a scratch on the screen, even without a screen protector. I'm very disappointed in the screen strength on the Iphone, so much so that I will probably leave again for the Pixel 4. Complete trash in my opinion for such an expensive phone.

I've had my XR for over a year now. The first screen I had, the original, did not take any scratches at all for a year. Then I had to had it replaced in the Apple Store due a dead pixel. As soon as they replaced the screen I started noticing small scratches everywhere. Seems odd that two screens for the same phone seem to have different toughness levels...

Yes! I just had an exactly same issue. I literally scratched my iPhone XR screen with PLASTIC! I don’t how that’s possible but it happened.

In a basic material science class on physical properties, the correlation between strength, hardness, brittleness, and toughness is explored. It's possible to make something practically scratch resistant, such as using sapphire. But that would be extremely brittle and requires a lot of thickness to resist breakage.
