So I tried using the stacks feature. Worked as advertised.
Now when I add files to the desktop they 1) do not just automatically get added to the existing file type stack, and 2) I cannot figure out a way to add. them.
So is this feature really this limited and if so, what good is it?
You're welcome. I don't know what would cause that. You could try toggling "Use Stacks" and see if they gather together.
You can also test in a different user account.

I don't use Stacks because I never have files/folders on the Desktop but I believe the idea is to make the Desktop less cluttered. It's not an organizational feature to be modified.
Thank -- but that's just what I'm saying is not working for me. I did the same -- to no avail. New images will not stack with the old. I have a number of screen shots, all of them PNG. When adding new ones, they do not stack on their own and I cannot make them.
So what I am missing is this feature in Mojave.
FWIW, just to test the feature I added 3 images to the Desktop and enabled "Use Stacks". They gathered together into a stack. I added another image and it combined with the others. So I'm not sure what you are missing.
