How to create a custom midi drums track stack in Logic Pro X for Vdrums, Alesis Drums and so on..
Hello,
through lots of aggravation, searches, videos and such i wanted to share an easy go to to create your own track stack for midi drums. i am using an Alesis Crimson kit, but this method will work on all electronic drum kits to my knowledge.. So here we go.. and don't forget when finished to save it as a template for the future.
- Start with an empty project.
- Select the arrow to the right on the time/position display and select custom to expand.
- tap each trigger and see what note pops up on the display and write it down for each trigger.
- Create software instrument tracks with empty channel strips, as many as needed for your setup. my Alesis kit has a total of 16 trigger points, 17 if you want to use the hi hat pedal as a trigger as well. *The hi hat pedal will still open and close the hats if the extra track is not created..
- Add 1 extra software instrument track. This is for later.
- Rename each track starting on the second track and include the note to be triggered. example: Kick C1, Snare D1, Snare Rim E1, and so on...
- Select the desire track to add a voice. Library>Electronic Drum Kit>Drum machine designer>Kit Pieces>Kick (select desired voice) and so on for each track.
- If The voice is not in that order, lets say you select a drum kit from Drum Kit Designer. You have found the sound you desire for the trigger you select but the note is not the note needed from the drum kit. example: Kick is sending note C1, but the sound you want is on A1. You will need to do the following.
- under Midi Effects add a Transposer. If The sound you want is A1 but is needed on C1, using the transposer while hitting the C1 move the cursor left or right 1 semi note at a time until the sound you desire from A1 is being triggered by C1..
- adjust the key limits. do so by clicking on the note and sliding the mouse up or down. Default is C-1 G8, Both notes need to be the same making the selected track only trigger the one note. example: C1 C1. do this on each track...
- select unused track, edit>select tracks>instrument this will highlight all tracks.
- Right Click on the unused track>Create Track Stack>Summing Track>Create..
- Select Window>Open Midi Environment
- Click New>Mapped Instrument
- Close the keyboard that pops up
- Drag cable from the mapped instrument icon to the unused track(Mapped Track as i renamed it).
- Click Don't Remove on the port setting warning.
- Close midi environment
- Select the mapped instrument track
- right click>Reassign Track>Mixer>Mapped Instrument
- Done..
