What is the skinny line at the bottom of my 2018 11” ipad, ios 12

I just started using an iPad Pro 11”, today. There is a line at the bottom of the screen which never goes away. It’s centered and about 2 or 21/2” long. On white backgrounds it is black. On black backgrounds it is bright white. It really detracts from the look of the screen and is distracting. What is it? How do I get rid of it? Thanks for your help.

I don’t understand why the bar is helpful. If we learn the gestures, why is the bar needed? It seems very un-Apple like to me. I now know I can’t get rid of it so I appreciate your response and the other I received but I truly wish there was an “Accessibility” option to remove it.

I agree that skinny bar is very annoying and there has to be an option to remove it. It really does not do anything except shows where the bottom of the screen is. I understand it is a reminder to swipe from the bottom in lou of the absence of a home button but that’s all it is and does nothing else. The iPad only has four corners top, left, right and bottom so all one has to remember is swipe from the bottom duuuh!!!!!!! Apple, for the sake of your customers sanity please allow us to turn that off.

rbrylawski, chill a little. A lot of us do not need a line to show us how to use our devices, just as we do not need lines for other Apple gestures. We are all entitled to our views. The line may be useful for you, but for me and others we do not need it and it is an annoyance... If you do not like the postings on this group, suggest you go to a different forum.

There doesn't have to be a way to remove it, because it's useful and Apple didn't provide a way to remove it. This "annoying" line as you suggest is on every iOS device where there is no longer a home button. It's not going to go away, so you'll just have to get used to it. Or purchase a different device that better meets your needs.

You are not writing Apple anyway. If you don't like this useful bar, tell Apple, not us fellow users who have no control over Apple design. You can provide feedback via this link: https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

You're entitled to not like it. What you can't do is change it. So complaining about it on a user to user only forum get's you nothing. Tell Apple how you feel. I can post to any thread I choose. Perhaps you should buy the forum, then you can tell others who can post or not. While you're at it, become the head of Apple Engineering and you can design the iOS interface of your dreams. Cheers.
