I cannot write a document in English on my new iPad

I recently got an iPad, and I’ve been trying to use it for work, but as it is now, it’s absolutely useless. I’m Norwegian and I own a Norwegian keyboard, however my work is in English. When I try to write a document in English, it spellchecks as if it is in Norwegian, despite me having the iPad itself set to English, the language of the document set to english and the region of the document set to The UK. I have tried both Pages and MS Word.

The only solution I found online was to set the keyboard itself to English. However when I do this, it switches around all of the buttons, so the buttons no longer give me the letter pictured. I click 8, I get a 7. I click ‘ and I get a *, I tried getting a @ and I got the trademark symbol. So obviosly I can’t choose that solution. Is there any way to make it spellcheck in English without playing hide and seek with the keyboard, or should I just return the iPad?

I’d prefer not to turn off spellcheck as this is my second language and it helps a lot.
