Cracked screen- screen protector

My iPhone X has a tempered glass screen protector on it, with several cracks in the protector. It looks like one or possibly two cracks are on my actual screen underneath the protector. (The tempered glass doesn’t fit as well as I had hoped, leaving the edges vulnerable)

I cannot afford to replace the screen right now, but wondering if I can remove this glass screen protector and just put a plastic one over. Or if taking this protector off will cause more damage to the cracks underneath once they are exposed. I don’t want to make it any worse
