Why does Airport Extreme stay blinking yellow on set up...

A new AE on a Centurylink ISP with a fiber-optic connection to a ZyXEL C3000Z modem. I called Centurylink and rebooted the modem back to it's defaults. The cat6 cable is good. AE is plugged in. Airport utility can't see AE since it is not set up to the internet. The CenturyLink tech said I did't even need to use his modem and that I could connect directly to his ethernet cable. That gave the same yellow blinking light. What can possibly be wrong? Has the ISP modem output signal changed recently?

Features of modem: IPv6Vectoring2.4 GHz b/g/n5 GHz n/acVectoringCBRAS.

Bonded: VDSL2_100Mbps

My older Apple modem connected to the internet on an ATT fiber-optic modem in about 5 min. I'll leave it connected the rest of the night to see if that works.

I found the answer to make my Airport Utility work so I could use it to setup the Airport Extremes.

From Bob Timmons in wireless (tagged with "recommended by Apple"). Once my mac network preferences were changed, Airport Utility was able to set up the Airport extremes. I first use the ISP wireless radio later I used an ethernet wire from my mac to the AE which was less fussy.

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:

• The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.

• You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.

• A new firmware update is available for the base station.

• One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.

About the status light on AirPort base stations - Apple Support

To find out why your base station's status LED is flashing amber:

• Open AirPort Utility

• Click on the AirPort base station

• Look for a Status setting in the small window that appears. Note: Status only appears if there is an issue or notification.

Click on the small amber dot there and another window will open to explain what the "issue" might be.
