I discovered that a valid ePub can be used on iBooks just as well as an iBooks Author file exported as well. Do you find that to be true?
iBooks has accepted epub since at least 2010, so many people have done that. Here is a reference put out by Apple

We are trying to figure out the error message after uploading our ePub. Message as follows:
The session's status is FAILED and the error description is 'failed to open ssh session. (16)'
Error: Internal error: Java.net.MalformedURLException: unknown protocol: bundle schema/20/rng/container.rng" at Book/BookAssets
Apple replied saying we needed the latest version of iTunes Producer and update latest version of Java which we have...
Java 8 Updata 191, and iTunes Producer 3.1.1
Any ideas?
Is there a special reason you want to edit this further in iBA? Have you tried importing the original idml file instead of epub?
I did have more success with the .IDML file. In the meantime, I discovered that a valid ePub can be used on iBooks just as well as an iBooks Author file exported as well. Do you find that to be true?
Thanks, we uploaded the ePub and received an error message rearding JAVA so off on another journey.
If you post the details of the error language here, someone might be able to help.
best do a separate posting with a tltle briefly describing the error
