Unicode Hex Input

Hi,

I am trying to insert music symbols, which are 5 digit codes, and I think exist in the Noto Symbol font.

So the treble clef should be alt+1D120, but all I get is the symbol for alt+1D12 (ᴒ).

I have tried other fonts with the same problem.

(I got these codes from the Unicode Musical Symbol chart.)

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Harry.

AFAICT the "Unicode Hex Input" input source works this way. It expects four byte codes.

Here is what I suggest.

1) Locate the character you want in the font.

2) Go to System Preferences->Keyboard->Text

3) Add a new text replacement. Enter some text abbreviation on the left, and drag or copy/paste the symbol to the right.

Now whenever you want to insert this symbol, just type its abbreviation.

Thank you dialabrain and luis for taking the trouble to write. It is very good of you.

I have been using the character viewer already, but by default it only shows 4-digit unicode glyphs, so the range of music symbols in this block is very limited.

After I posted I found that 5 digit codes can be accessed by clicking "unicode" at the bottom left of the character viewer window, which gives access to the other more abstruse codes. (A lot of scrolling, and no way to make a bookmark, but one can add symbols to favourites.) I leave this comment as an aid to others.

luis: thank you for the tip on text replacement. I will certainly use it.

The helpfulness of this forum is really heartwarming.
