No signal from MacMini to monitor

Just unboxed my new Mac Mini. I'm trying to connect it to a Dell monitor with VGA and DVI ports, so I got an HDMI to VGA adapter and plugged it in to the monitor. The monitor (which works fine with my MacBook Air) says it's not getting any signal. With no display it's kinda hard to figure out what's going on inside the brick. Any suggestions for how to establish communication?

I suspect a bad or incompatible adopter. You made need a active adapter. Active ones use auxiliary power which is usually mini/micro USB cable. Here is one

An HDMI to DVI adapter is simpler/more reliable since since it is pure digital while an HDMI>VGA is digital to analog.

Edited to add DVI

No signal from MacMini to monitor
