iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

Goto Setting -> General -> Accessibility -> Touch Accommodations, Turn on Touch Accommodations. Leave everything else in the options alone.

All my touch issues gone!”

No.

Not true.

You are talking about millions of iPad Pro models sold over three years!

There is NO where, NO WHERE where there are millions of iPad Pro user posting of this unresponsive issue.

If this unresponsive touch screen issue was sooooo widespread, the tech and TV media would have been ALL OVER THIS by now and Apple would have had to come up with some sort of fix for this long, ago.

Even if this has affected 100,000 iPad Pro models, this is still anywhere from 5%-10% of affected users.

A small minority of affected iPad Pro models.

I do not think this affects anywhere near 100,000 users.

Maybe, MAYBE, 10,000 to 20,000 users, or so.

An even a smaller minority group of affected users!

Don't be ridiculous.

Because it is a random and completely unpredictable bug/issue, as I already stated to you, earlier!

There is NO pattern to those iPad Pros already affected.

No causation as to what causes this issue.

NONE.

I do not want my iPad Pro to become one of this minority group.

i am not arguing with you on this.

Actually, for the past couple of weeks, there have been NO new postings of this iPad Pro unresponsive touch screen issues.

Believe what you will.

Do what you will.

I am done.

FYI, not that you need to know, but the new iPadOS is too radical an improvement on iOS to NOT upgrade to, so as soon as the iPadOS download/install frenzy is over after the first few weeks, my iPad Pro WILL BE getting and running the new iPadOS.

I will use iTunes on my Mac, as I always do, and will just have to take the risk, take a leap of faith and hope for a successful iOS upgrade outcome.

90? Not even close. This forum is the most widely visited iPad forum in the world. The amount of people coming here is statistically insignificant in comparison to the number of iPad being used around the world every day.

I have two iPad Pro 11's neither of which have any touch issues. If this affected 90% of all iPad Pro owners, this thread would be so replied to, by so many people, but it's not really. And that's because the vast majority of iPad Pro users don't have an issue and have no need to come here to tell us they are having a great time with their iPad.

I am also using the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for the last 5 months and I notice it very frequently while playing games..

I use four fingers while playing and some times not all fingers are registered and this happens very randomly but when this does it doesn’t go away until I restart the iPad completely.

very annoying and couldn’t find any fix for it

So, now iPadOS 13 is out, I can speak about it 😉

Well... No improvement, so sad 😢

Actually, fun fact, after updating to iPadOS 13.1, arrived on my passcode screen, my iPad froze... So I knew strait away!

I will continue looking for a solution. My major worry is, how can I sell my iPad Pro, worth 700$, to anyone, with this issue?! The guy will send it back to me after a few days. So I am stuck with an unreliable expensive device.

Look,

Not every iPad Pro has this issue.

iPads are coming down with this issue at random and unpredictability with no pattern/s of obvious reasons of causality.

Every iPad Pro user affected uses their iPad Pros differently.

I am wondering now if this issue is just not ONLY an iOS 12 issue, but an iOS issue caused by a certain combination of 3rd party apps common to every iPad Pro user affected by this issue.

That would explain why this only affects a small minority of iPad Pro users and NOT every single iPad Pro model sold to date.

If there was an obvious fix, I have to believe Apple would have found a fix/solution for this issue, by now.

At this time it is what it is.

If your iPad Pro is one of tbe 2018 models, have you tried toggling OFF the Tap to Wake feature in the Settings app, under General, Accessibility?

Thanks for you reply MichelPM,

My iPad Pro is a 2017 and I reinstalled fully the OS 4 weeks ago and used it as “new” (in case the issue was in the iCloud backup). And I had freezes on it very short after, with NO app installed.

I understand your reasoning because I had the same, but unfortunately it is not a combinaison of 3rd party app

Sep 24, 2019 1:02 PM in response to Jean-LucL

It depends on how you updated your ipad

this is my experience , at first hours of releasing a new version of ios , if you update your device on itself sometimes have many problems because of busy servers

then you should update with your PC’s iTunes or wait for about 12 to 24 hours

but I guess that the problem persists on ipadOS too

unfortunately Apple isn’t as good as before in these years 😔

i was an Apple’s fan but this issue made me really disappointed 😑
