iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is NOT what you are going to want to read/learn, but this is a known issue across all iPad Pro year and models ( even the brand new 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models ) and it is starting to affect both the 2018 and 2017 6th and 5th gen 9.7 inch screen iPads, too!!

I am beginning to think that this is a growing issue that is NOT hardware related, but either iOS 11 and/or iOS 12 related bug.

I have a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro still running iOS 10.3.3 and I am NOT experiencing these recent intermittent touch screen issues.

The best you can do is alert Apple to this growing issue.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.

iPad Feedback

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the proper and responsible Apple teams and personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

The more users that post product feedback about any product issue, the faster Apple is made aware and starts working on a fix/solution for a future software update.

Also, you may want to phone contact Apple, directly in Cupertino, California, and calmly talk to an Apple customer service employee about this issue via the link below.

Agreed, it is odd and tricky to pinpoint a consistent cause. My iPad Pro worked fine for months after purchase - it’s just been a problem in recent weeks or months. As you say - it’s not a lag, it’s actually non-responsive to touch for a bit. I mostly noticed it when playing YouTube videos in the mini-player mode, so i also suspected maybe it was the app stealing CPU cycles - but adding the glass screen protection completely fixed the problem, including when playing videos. I have no idea why that’d make a difference. Shame, as the extra glass ruins the coolness of the Pro’s laminated screen.

I strongly agree with you.

And I say, as I said here before, that the problem appeared from a certain point, in my view, through new versions of IOS. I understand that this is a Software problem that must be solved. This seems to be proven by the fact that the devices are changed and the problems persist.

The devices have a sale date, and their warranty, and the company's responsibility, is only 12 months (basically).

Being the problem caused by IOS, I think it is legally fair and legitimate, that Apple is responsible for guaranteeing the software product (not the DEVICE - iPad product).

Switching to a logitech keyboard case improved the situation, but did not solve it. The screen is still frequently non-responsive. Apple continues to refuse to help now that the my replacement iPad is 90 days past its replacement warranty. Apple support insists this is a problem which affects a small number of devices. My hunch is that most people are simply tolerating the issue. If it was that small, why not replace the defective devices?

first of all the iPad Pro 12.9 screen is a finger print magnet and I have to keep on cleaning it every 15 minutes. I had to purchase an apple pen to try to avoid using my fingers. I cannot play games because the screen freezes due to the lag of the touch screen. If you compare the iPad to the IPhone it’s totally different. The iPhone touch screen is excellent and never lags. I am no longer playing games with my iPad and now I’m using the iPad pen to avoid touching the screen. Otherwise i tired many solutions nothing works.

I just became aware of this problem being so widespread. I have the problem with my older iPad Pro in spades. It worked great for a long time, then this started. I have done all the recommended stuff. Nothing.

Typing was fine a long time, which makes me wonder if it might have been introduced in some iOS upgrade?

At various times it seems to be timing, positional, pressure, or heat related. Real random. Sometimes the stutter acts like a long pause and suddenly kicks in. Sometimes changing a hand or finger to tap with keeps things going. Sometimes pressing hard and deliberately unsticks it. One constant — It seems to deteriorate with time, it gets worse the longer I type. Cleaning the screen helps for a couple of minutes, then it stops again. I’ve taken to keeping a screen cleaner cloth handy all the time! I’m feel pretty done with this, iPad.

"It's pretty clearly a software problem, not a hardware problem."

ABSOLUTELY!

My 5-year-old iPad Air 2 was a joy to use until I updated to iPadOS 13. It then became a total nightmare. When the screen finally went bad (I guess from old age) I bought an Apple refurbed iPad Air 3. I expected the intermittent freezes, the single finger touch and swipe problems, and Safari webpages zooming in for no discernible reason would be a thing of the past.

NOPE!

I’m adding my name to the growing list of iPad users with intermittent unresponsive iPad Pro touch screens.

I have had an iPad Pro 10.5 inch which has been great until the last two iPad software updates. The most recent update, 13.5.1, kind of broke my touchscreen. I will be typing and suddenly I notice the letters I type are missing, or the screen won’t respond to any touch at all for 6 seconds! It was working beautifully before that. I really hate to say it, but after reading about so many others having this problem for so long (since 2016?) without a fix, Apple is becoming more and more like Microsoft! ☹️😡

I am a retired self-employed woman and use my iPad constantly. It is essential in my everyday life...and I cannot afford to buy a new one at this time. I am quite disappointed and definitely frustrated!

Please let me know if/when you find a fix.It

Susan

It's not a hardware problem. I got a new iPad pro (on technicality of backlight problem) and issue persists. Chat says problem started with IOS12. sorry when I say software problem I mean IOS not second party apps but apple IOS. Good luck with getting it fixed! I think this problem exists with new iPads so IOS-Hardware I guess really chicken or egg!?
