iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is NOT what you are going to want to read/learn, but this is a known issue across all iPad Pro year and models ( even the brand new 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models ) and it is starting to affect both the 2018 and 2017 6th and 5th gen 9.7 inch screen iPads, too!!

I am beginning to think that this is a growing issue that is NOT hardware related, but either iOS 11 and/or iOS 12 related bug.

I have a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro still running iOS 10.3.3 and I am NOT experiencing these recent intermittent touch screen issues.

The best you can do is alert Apple to this growing issue.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.

iPad Feedback

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the proper and responsible Apple teams and personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

The more users that post product feedback about any product issue, the faster Apple is made aware and starts working on a fix/solution for a future software update.

Also, you may want to phone contact Apple, directly in Cupertino, California, and calmly talk to an Apple customer service employee about this issue via the link below.

Your iPad Air 2 and 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro issues seem to be, somewhat, unrelated to the more common iPad Pro touch screen issues happening here.

And if you read most of this post, this issue affects all 4 iPad Pro model years and has not, largely, been charge related.

The majority of users reported this happening during/after various upgrades/updates within the iOS 12 cycle.

endless.

just google: “ipad screen unresponsive while charging”.

yes, charging.

but symptoms are the same. and in both cases “fix” is to touch metal back, or do some tricks with gyro.

if touching metal back partially fixes the problem - this is static and no more.

>>that charging issue, again, for touch screen issues.

hope you have degree in physics as i have to make such fast diagnosis ;-)

gyro sensor can be affected by static electricity too (that is why it has some effect on this issue).

I have just purchased an iPad 2019 7th generation. Traded in an old iPad 4 which was no longer receiving software updates, but the touchscreen worked perfectly. My new one is suffering the same touchscreen issues as your pro model. It seems this is an Apple issue across the board. I will try the Touchscreen accommodations in settings and keep my fingers crossed and I will take your advise re reporting to Apple.

Here's is a new user in this new post that had a perfectly running 2017, 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro, then JUST upgraded to iPadOS 13.1.3 and is just NOW getting this intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue!

This is definitely some sort of software based issue!

I’ve had my Pro 12.9 replaced 3 times and have the same unresponsiveness issues. I believe it is a hardware issue not software since this has been going on for years and Apple as not solved with software releases. Apple has millions of these units out and can’t afford to replace them all. Just purchased 9.7 inch Pro and will restore my system and see what happens.

I tend to agree with the hypothesis that it is a hardware issue beyond the reach of Apple’s diagnostic tools (or, one they know about and don’t want to address because of the cost of replacements). An intermittent problem with the touchscreen itself that is made worse with use and that may be connected with another component such as the gyro. All the other hypotheses about software updates, settings, etc, seem like coincidences and red herrings ultimately. Nevertheless, I have tried all the remedies spoken of here and would do so again if my replacement iPad begins to exhibit the problem.

I’ll say this, I am handling it with kid gloves and especially, trying to type on the screen as gently as possible, which is not what I used to do. I am an older guy and learned to type on a typewriter, so my fingers really used to jab the screen.

I have.

See my later posts about this on later past pages of this post.

Unfortunately, it appears not enough iPad Pro models have been affected and not enough feedback supplied to Apple for Apple engineers to be made made aware of this still growing issue only affecting a minority amount of iPad Pro models across all 4 model years, as well as, some of the new 2019 iPad Air 3 models which use many of the same design elements as the 2017, 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro models, that are, also, affected by this touchscreen bug.

So, this issue has NOT been on Apple's priority fix radar at all, it would seem.

Could be a very long time before all iPad Pro models with this touchscreen bug get a fix/solution/iOS update from Apple.

At this very late stage, almost a year now, it is what it is.

Apple engineers are NOT aware of this as it appears NOT enough iPad Pros have been affected by this touch screen bug and it appears NOT enough feedback has bben supplied for Apple personnel to be sufficiently alerted to begin to even start working on this issue.

Sorry.

I sent my iPad to Apple and clearly explained the problem. I even provided links to 2 YouTube videos that I uploaded showing the unresponsiveness and then clearly showing my device serial number.

I got an email from tech support saying they received my iPad. About 2 hours later I received another email saying they couldn't replicate the problem and were shipping my iPad back to me. I asked specifically for a replacement.

I'm definitely disappointed. If this was a 5 year old iPad it would be one thing, but their flagship Pro model with the No-Motion 0Hz responsive display is beyond words. The Pro-Motion was one of the reasons I got a Pro model.

Anyway, definitely looking more closely at Android tablets. I want to sell my iPad but cannot in good conscience sell this to someone and say it's in good working order.

Here are links to these long standing, longer posts on the subject of this intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue.

There is STILL NIO solution/fix from Apple, to date and appears none are forthcoming after a complete year of this issue has gone by.

No one with this tochscrern issue is sending enough regular feedback back to Apple to alert Apple engineers of this continuing, growing iPad Pro tochscreen issue!

After 12 months, Apple engineers have NO CLUE about this issue! None!

Everyone here and in other touchscreen bug postings needs to continue to hammer the iPad feedback page more than once ( I believe you can post multiple feedback, but only one feedback posting a day ).

Having seen and tried all of the fixes I came to the conclusion that there is not one issue nor one solution. The apparent lack of interest from Apple isn’t going to do their marketing much good as there is no way I would spend £1000 on trust with them in the future.

Anyway to add to the possible solutions; mine was going through a spell of working near normal until I cleaned the screen. I am now thinking static.

I have the same problem. I have a 12.0 pro 2017 and i have a problem when i don’t clean my screen every ten minutes if i am playing a game or working using touch. Screen becomes not responsive and i cant swipe up or down for a couple of seconds. I have to keep on trying. I complained to apple dealers and they said it’s normal and i have to keep on cleaning the screen. They said the finger print from person to person various and some people get oil on the screen from their fingerprints. I have tried everything and nothing works. This is a tab which means fingerprints should not be a problem and should not affect the performance of the device. Anyways, i stopped playing games because i would have to clean the screen every ten minutes which is ridiculous...
