Dark mode keeps resetting to light mode

Following OS Mojave update 10.14.2 on my Mac Book Pro Late 2013 model (2.4GHz, Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3) after I choose "dark mode" it resets back to light mode.

It does so on each restart and seems each day (ie not necessarily restarting/shutting down). I tried closing it or putting it to sleep during the day, but that does not trigger it right away - there is a time period for it to be triggered.

I have tried restarting the laptop once, set to dark mode, and the same behavior happens.

Yes yes yes, I have done all updates to my Mac Book pro. Also, my second computer, iMac late 2015 does not exhibit the same OS problem.

Hello readmetwice,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are having an issue with using the dark appearance as expected on your MacBook Pro, and you don't have this issue on your iMac. You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Change General preferences on Mac

Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
Loads only required kernel extensions
Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
Disables user-installed fonts
Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log in to your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.
