Vertical multicoloured and or b/w lines with a white background

Hi guys,

I have a Mid 2014 15" MacBook Pro Retina Display and since yesterday afternoon, the display has been playing up. I was using Adobe Indesign yesterday for some creative work and I noticed a very faint vertical line towards the right hand side of the screen. At first I thought it was a glitch from the software, but I then noticed that the line ran all the way across the screen. When I moved the screen (up and down) the line multiplied and some of them disappeared. This also happened when I lightly pressed behind the screen (outer cover), the lines would multiply or just vanish, but then reappear. Some of the lines would tend to disappear over time, but the lines made it difficult to do any form of work or general browsing.

I turned the MBP off late afternoon and then turned it back on and the lines got worse, but eventually some of them started disappearing. This morning I turned it on, before doing my brush and at first there were no lines, upon the log in screen. I still left the MBP on and after coming out of the bathroom, the lines appeared and there seemed to more of them and they were difficult to remove. When I touched/pressed the screen, the lines would go and then come back. I pressed the screen on the other side and the same thing kept happening, then the screen started showing more lines, thicker ones in multiple colours. When I tried moving the screen up and down, the lines got worse, and then I just turned the MBP via shut down.

When I started it up, the screen currently looked like this and it still looks like this:

I can hear the chime, but I can't log in. I've contacted Apple Support via chat and explained the issue to the advisor and they've booked me a Genius Bar appointment for next week. I went to my local Apple Store earlier on, but they were really busy, and I was told to come back, tomorrow morning. For now I have left my MBP on charge.

Yesterday, whilst the MBP was still usable, I tried Apple Hardware Test and the only issue it came up with was with the battery, stating that it needed replacing soon. I also tried Disk Utility and the result was fine. Earlier on, whilst it was still useable, I tried the test that included holding Command + Option + P + R and nothing happened. I am going to retry the SMC reset, because I don't think I did it right earlier on. When I did it, the MBP wouldn't turn on, but I just remembered that I didn't hold it for 10 seconds. I will try that again.

A few other things I may as well mention are:

1) The screen that I am using is a replacement one, as the original screen's (retina) coating got damaged in 2016 and I was entitled to a free replacement under a limited warranty.

2) I bought a particular racing game from the App Store and when I used to play it, the screen would sometimes glitch and the fan would go on like crazy. When I use my antivirus software to scan my MBP, the fan usually goes on, but there would be no glitches on the screen.

3) If I am on some movie or episode based websites, the fan sometimes goes on crazy and then lag may appear at times. I can't remember, but sometimes I would get a message stating that either too much memory or GPU is being used. I can't remember which one is it. This also happens at times when I am on Adobe Illustrator and I am working on a massive file.

4) Before deciding to go to the Apple store, I tried to connect my MBP to a spare Samsung TV using a HDMI cable. I usually connect my MBP to this TV to watch movies or YouTube in bigger format. I connected the MBP first and turned the TV on after and a Forgot your Password message appeared and it showed a list of languages. I could operate the controls of my MBP and clicked cancel, because I didn't need to change my password. The MBP just turned off then. When I turned it on again, the TV wouldn't display anything.

I am going to try the SMC reset again and if that doesn't work, I may just leave it until tomorrow. I don't know what else to do. Could you guys give me some advice please? Do you guys happen to know what the problem is? What hardware or software is effecting my MBP? I have a feeling it could be to do with the graphics card or the entire screen needs changing. I don't know though. Your input would be grateful!

The spec of my MBP is:

15 inch Retina Display:

2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with 6MB L3 cache

16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM

512GB of flash storage

Intel Iris Pro Graphics

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDRS memory

Took this info from the box.

Kind Regards,

Just a quick update, I had my genius bar appointment last Friday and it turned out that my entire screen needed replacing. I was given a quote of approximately £670.00 to get it replaced. Everything else still works, as the technician managed to connect my MBP to one of their external monitors. He shut the screen down whilst starting it up, and it worked. I don't know how he did it, but I was able to control my MBP through their screens. Does anyone know what this method is?
