Pencil doesn't attach to iPad's side
I purchased the IPad 6th generation and the Pencil. The Pencil is supposed to magnetically attach to the side of the IPAD but it does not. What is the problem.

The Pencil for the 6th Gen does not connect magnetically. https://www.apple.com/apple-pencil/
This is the Pencil you should have: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0C2AM/A/apple-pencil
Only the Second Generation Pencil mentions the ability to magnetically connect. https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MU8F2AM/A/apple-pencil-2nd-generation

Yes, it works with that iPad, but it charges by plugging it into the lightning port or the charger, the latter requiring a usb cable that has a female lighting rather than a male. And it does not stick to the side of any iPad. Instructions are very straightforward, so should be easy. Loved mine, but now even happier with 3rd gen iPad Pro and Apple Pencil 2.
The ONLY Apple Pencil that attaches to an iPad is the Apple Pencil 2.
The Apple Pencil 2 ONLY works with the 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models which have a small single magnetic area on one side of the 3rd gen iPad Pro where the new Apple Pencil 2 attaches.
Your 6th gen iPad has no magnetic attachment points and that iPad model uses the older 1st gen Apple Pencil ( with silver metal band at top of pencil ) which has NO way to magnetically attach to the iPad to charge it.
With the 6th gen iPad, the 1st gen Apple Pencil charges by removing the top cap of the Apple Pencil and plug the Pencil into the Lightning port of the 6th gen iPad
OR
Use the special Apple Pencil charging cord/adapter that plugs into the supplied iPad Apple power block, to charge the 1st generation Apple Pencil.
Good Luck to You!
Apple Pencils only work with iPad Pros, not standard iPads. The current standard iPad is the 6th generation iPad, and does not work with either Apple Pencil. The latest generation of the iPad Pro is the 3rd generation iPad Pro. It is the only generation that works with the Apple Pencil 2, which is the one that sticks to the side of the iPad Pro third generation. The first and second generations are compatible with the original Apple Pencil.
Thank you for your reply. I will read directions on use of the of the pencil I purchased.
The Apple packaging the pencil came in states it is a pencil for the sixth generation iPad.
It’s somewhat confusing.
