The operating temperature range for iPhones is 32ºF to 95ºF. As the phone was outside that range it couldn't work. That's why modern cold weather gear has inside pockets to keep phones against your body, where they will stay within normal operating ranges. This is a good time to use Bluetooth or wired headsets and Siri to make and receive calls.

A phone may or may not work outside of its temperature range. It is more likely to work at low temperatures if the battery charge is high; batteries lose capacity as they get colder. That's the primary reason for a cold weather problem. Also, if the phone is doing stuff that generates heat that will mitigate the situation somewhat. A belt clip can be OK if you have a warm outer garment that covers it and holds it against your body, but you would be better off switching to the phone pocket that your coat almost certainly has in cold weather.

Thanks for your original reply it seemed to work for 1 day when I was outside I kept phone in my pocket and was fine. Now its not making or receiving calls while Im in the house for hours at a time unless I restart it. Any thoughts? I plan on taking it to the

apple store for service either way because phone not working indoors theirs obviously to me a bigger issue than not just working in cold weather. I've only had the phone a couple of months and never dropped it
