iMac, High Sierra and HP officejet 4500

Hi. My parents got an iMac in 2011 that came with an HP Officejet 4500 printer. Recently I updated the OS from Yosemite to High Sierra (10.13.6). When we tried to use the scanner function, we got a warning message that the HP software may not be supported by the new OS. Scanning is OK (can see image on screen in the HP software), but the image doesn't save to disc (see attached screenshot). I haven't contacted HP yet, but the printer is 8 years old. There's nothing wrong with it and it's a waste to toss it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hopefully that may give us more clues.

Then there's my preferred method... Vuescan...

Can't find a driver for your HP Officejet 4500 G510a-f ?

We reverse engineered the HP Officejet 4500 G510a-f driver and included it in VueScan so you can keep using your old scanner.
