Safari quit unexpectedly - 2019

I cannot open Safari. I repeatedly get the "Safari quit unexpectedly" message. The only options are 'ignore' and 'report'.

I've seen elsewhere in support about a Genieo malware. However, I've reviewed those posts over and over and I cannot seem to perform any of the suggested actions because I have none of those Genieo files.

The other day, restarting my Mac did the trick to allow Safari to open. Now, however, it is not working.

Please help!

 1. If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues

     https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203353

 2. If this  doesn’t help, download EtreCheck: https://etrecheck.com/maspro  and post the report here.

This is a diagnostic test. Reading the report will help us avoid unnecessary Q & A sessions.

Click, “Free Download” button and then  “Click to download” button,

open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Click on the bouncing  EtreCheck icon in the Dock.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .

Paste the report when you reply.

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

This may require a reset of some other Preferences.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

You might want to update your OS to 10.13.6 to get the latest security updates and system fixes.

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update

The report shows you installed MacKeeper. If Malwarebytes didn't remove it, I would uninstall it.

By "2019" do you mean the latest version of Safari, v12??? If not, let us know because troubleshooting Safari 12 can be different from earlier versions. Do "About Safari..." to see your version:

Launch Safari while holding the SHIFT key--it will open in Safe Mode. See if it is stable. If it is, you may have an incompatible Safari extension. Go to Safari Preferences > Extensions and disable all extensions. Then restart Safari normally. If it works, you have isolated to problem to one or more extensions. Re-enable extensions one at a time and test. If the problem returns, the last extension you enabled is the cause.

Safari can also do what you describe if you have loaded up you computer with anti-virus software or so-called "cleaning/tune-up/optimizing" apps. All interfere with the protection built into the macOS and cause slowness and stability issues.

EtreCheck reports the presence of Chill-Tab extension.

Since you get the same response when in Safe Mode, that option is closed.

I checked the Library folder for Safari Extension.plist, I couldn't find the familiar file.

There is one there, but I have to test it before posting the howto.

These malware keep evolving day by day.

Meanwhile try this. Sorry for making too many suggestions.

Launch System Preferences.

Go to the bottom of the pane.

Do you see any Profile listed? If you see one, please post back.

We go from there.

I noticed the Chill-tab extension that is still appearing. When I do this:

Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Select and uninstall Chill-Tab extension.

I can't uninstall because it says it is part of the Chill-tap app and prompts me to view it in Finder. I can move the app to trash from there but the extension can't be uninstalled even after emptying the trash. Then the app reappears. Am I missing something?

Feb 16, 2019 6:01 PM in response to Chamfer420

Finder > Applications > Chill-Tab

Right click it and choose "Move to Trash".

Empty the Trash.

Restart the Mac.

Uninstall Extension.

If you still cannot, Open Activity Monitor and check.

Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU

Do you see any Safari Extension under All Processes running?

Try quitting it. Click the Stop button at top left corner.

Now try.
