automation not working

I have the most recent version of Logic Pro X. In my most recent project I finishing mixing and leveling the db's of the tracks, but when I went to the automation stage something got messed up.

For example, my "Chorus" track's original level is -11db. But, whenever I want to pencil in an automation I can only hear it when I am on the track, but when I get out and hear it again it goes right back to -11db. I have checked the editor and have tried to reset the automation but nothing is working.

I hope this makes sense and hopefully someone has an answer how to fix this because I have been stuck on this all day (over 6 hours) and nothing online has the answer with how to fix this and reset the automation to where I can edit with the pencil tool my desired automations.
