Using VLC app on Apple TV

I have VLC on my Apple TV box on my home network. On my computer I have a shared folder j:/Media/Season 1, j:/Media/Season 2, j:/Media/Season 3 -- with video files contained therein. From VLC on the Apple TV - I see the all the folders, but do not see the files. From other PC's on the network I can see the folders AND the files just fine. Any ideas how I can make VLC see the files under j:/media? thank you for any ideas

To see media files on the VLC app on Apple TV, I had to:

  1. on the computer, define SMB shared folders in System Preferences﹥[Network] File Sharing
  2. allow everyone (on the LAN) to access those folders as read-only
  3. connect through VLC on Apple TV, Local Network, with SMB protocol, as Anonymous Login.

Then only those shared folders are shown. Subfolders can be navigated, and media files (mp4, mkv, avi, etc.) are shown, and can be started there.
