Thanks. As I understand it, your MBP's internal mic is recognized, but it simply isn't responding to any input. The input level "bar graph" doesn't move at all, even if you slide its volume level to the right.

Try resetting that Mac's NVRAM: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support. Those settings are stored within that little piece of memory, and its contents can become corrupted. Resetting it would fix that problem.

Before you Contact Support, and if your Mac has an external audio input port (a round one), try inserting and removing a headphone plug. The reason may be an intermittent internal switch that has become contaminated.

You can do that repeatedly in an effort to dislodge the contamination but don't put anything else in there.

Only older MacBook Pro models have those ports.

Yes an external microphone worked.

I went to the local genius bar, and they thought it was a hardware problem and that I would need to send my laptop in.

Trick is to go into dictation and retry the sound bar. Odd, but it worked.

Describe the audio input options that appear in (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Sound > Input

Type: Built-in

Note: If I use a USB microphone, it works.

Your description is correct.

I tried resetting my Mac's NVRAM Cmd+Opt+P+R after reboot several times and the microphone still does not work.

Any further ideas would be appreciated.
