CarPlay interrupts music on bmw

We have car play on our X5, and with our current phone Xr and previous phone 6s apple CarPlay constantly shuts off the music we are listening to when our son plays with our phone. It seems to be putting the audio from whatever he’s playing onto the car system. We manually put the radio back on but within seconds we are hearing whatever he is playing again. There has to be a way to stop this without disconnecting the phone. Thanks in advance.

If you have the iPhone connected to the vehicle and make any changes in the phone, that is reflected in CarPlay. If you do not wish to use CarPlay, then plug the iPhone into a different USB port, if all you wish to do is charge it. You can still have the iPhone connected via Bluetooth for phone calls if desired, but even if you are using the vehicle radio for music, whenever your son does something on the iPhone if it is plugged into the port for CarPlay, then it will override the radio. Your only other option is to turn off CarPlay. I've done as I suggested by using a different USB port when it is in use in my car, since the kids can do several things that will cause CarPlay to take over.
