Is Java safe to install on my Mac?

I downloaded a product to convert PDF to excel (deskUnPDF) and it asked me to install Java for Mac. I've heard that Java in the past has had some vulnerabilities that opened potential security threats. Is that still true today 02/26/2019?

My mac is a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017).

I'd appreciate some guidance.

Get rid of it. You can do the conversions multiple ways with paying for that thing.

I haven't checked yet to see if the free Acrobat Reader will do this, but if you have Acrobat Pro, you can export a PDF to Excel right from the app.

There are also at least two dozen web sites you can use where you upload the PDF and it converts it to an Excel file you download back. They're all free. Here's one that doesn't require you leave them an email address (which is for nothing more than to sell it to advertisers). There's a lot more to choose from in this Google search.

I tested both just now. Acrobat Pro will do the conversion right on your desktop. The free Reader uploads the PDF to Adobe's server and does the conversion there. When it's done, it displays a link to download the converted file.

The free Reader also requires you to login to your Adobe account before it will do the conversion. If you don't have one, it's free to create.
