AppleTV Gen3 and IOS 12.1.4 Screen Mirroring Stopped working?

Hi All,

I used to be able to mirror my screen of my ipad to my AppleTV Gen 3 without any issues in the past simply by swiping down to show the control panel and select screen mirror. Yet since my last update I can no longer see my Gen3 AppleTV but my Gen4 AppleTV (which I also have) I can still see. I’ve named both different names so that I know which one I’m connecting to. Anyone else notice the problem?

As a side note though if I was to open my photo’s app, I can see both appleTV versions. It seems this only affected the mirroring feature. Does this mean that iOS 12.1.4 dropped mirroring support to the Gen3 versions of AppleTV?

That wouldn't be due to an update, and is more indicative of a network issue. Another device working doesn't rule that out.

If on wifi try the Apple TV on ethernet

Make sure no other activity is occurring (other streaming, web use, network backups etc)

To see a current status of the network get a report from stumbler, netstumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks.

Test on another network

Your iPad would still be operating over Wifi, and mirroring is a lot more intensive when compared to basic airplay. The issue you are experiencing can and often does occur due to interference on the network. As I already stated, another device working does not rule out a network issue.

It wouldn't be the update itself that caused the issue but rather that underlying issues within the network may have come to the surface, those issues can also come at any time . There is no such widespread issue that would be the result of a software issue, and there are always select users who report the exact same thing after each update (including the ones where it would have been working on your system).

If you want proper evidence then you will need to run a diagnostic report, and you are also free to take it to another network (preferably a controlled one like Apple's)

I have a similar problem. I ran a bunch of diagnostics today to rule out a network issue.

  • running 12.1.4 on iPhone XS and iPad 6th gen
  • Apple TV 3rd gen connected via Ethernet to 150/150Mbps connection.

I verified that the network is working via wired laptop tests. All patch cords and the switch are fine right to the Apple TV hardware.

Apple TV connected via Ethernet and wifi run network tests ok. Apple TV device will play content such as Netflix directly onto the TV.

Airplay streaming from iPhone or ipad wifi work fine when Apple TV connected via wifi.

Airplay does NOT connect to Apple TV when Apple TV connected via Ethernet. Airplay does appear as streaming option. Little donut spins on TV endlessly; content never appears.

In fact i have exactly the same problem. In my case my son is with 12.1.2 and he can connect our apple tv. I’m with 12.1.4 and i cannot connect. It just isnt visible to me. Neiher mirror, nor remote control. Nothing! I can setup remote

control only fron the app with the additional code, but it’s not through wifi. I have checked and me and my son are connected on the same router with similar ip etc...

So my ipad pro is obviously on WiFi, both AppleTV Gen3 and AppleTV Gen4 are on Ethernet (ie no WiFi). I can see both on the network (ie I can ping both). I can airplay on both using specific apps as both show up when I decide to stream to them. Yet when I go to the control panel (ie swipe down on the main ipad screen) and select “Screen Mirroring” only my Gen4 shows up.

What this means is there is no network related issues. It seems that “Screen Mirroring” only is effected. Note that also, I have an iphone SE that also has iOS 12.1.4 that exhibits the exact same issue. Both my ipad and my iphone SE were in the past (version iOS 11) were able to mirror on both devices. Only recently did I notice I could no longer see the Gen3 AppleTV.

Thank you for your suggestions to “test my network connections” yet seeing that the only WiFi connection is from my ipad to the network itself, which I have no issues accessing, I believe I can right off that suggestion as a problem. Both AppleTV products are sitting right next to each other and both are directly connected via ethernet. That ethernet connection is also on the same network that the WiFi is exposed to.

Anyone else have any suggestions. Let’s also rule out the “did I reboot the AppleTV” as yes I have done this already.

Hello Again,

Okay so let’s be a bit clearer on this matter as I am a network admin. I have 2 appleTV’s both connected to one wireless router via the Ethernet Jacks. I have One iPad Pro and One iPhone SE connected via the WiFi on the wireless router. The Wireless router has been configured with MAC locking to only allow the iPad Pro and the iPHone SE to connect. There are only 4 devices on the network (as I essentially testbedded the environment). All 4 devices are within 6 feet of the router and as I said before both AppleTV devices are connected via ethernet to the router. Both iPhone SE and iPad Pro can screen mirror to the Gen4 AppleTV, both iPad Pro and iPhone SE cannot screen mirror to the Gen3....

Before questioning the network again, I have 3 wireless routers that I have testbedded, Dlink, CISCO and TP-Link. All three exhibit the same problem. So back to my original question, has anyone had any issue using “Screen Mirroring” with a AppleTV Gen3 using iOS 12.1.4? If you can answer that question (which was my original question) I would be most appreciated. I’ve been using the apple lineup of devices since 2000 so I’m aware of the various problems they have had between iOS releases.

Being a network admin you should know what troubleshooting would need to be done and not use anecdotal evidence to try justify blaming the software. Going through equipment, based within the same environment isn't a sound argument either.

You still have yet to provide concrete evidence that rules out your network.

As far as 12.1.4 there have been a few select posts in regards to mirroring , just the same as with every other version of IOS going back to the point at which airplay was introduced. When those users have done investigation the issue has been rectified. If there was suddenly a bug introduced there would be countless reports within hours of 12.1.4 being released. Furthermore, there are other users who are able to mirror just fine from a 3rd gen as well as others who can continue to do so from a 2nd gen.

So again you cannot answer my most of basic question. Let me say it again:

”Can anyone presently Screen Mirror to an AppleTV Gen3?”

That’s my question. If someone, anyone can do so, then I can rule out the possibility that with iOS 12.1.4 there are no issues with the OS and these devices. As a network admin I can provide 100% concrete evidence that there are no network related issues but I doubt that the packet dumps would assist in this forum as there would be few that could read them. If I can rule out the OS version then I can assume that I might have a defective or a failed AppleTV gen3 device.

Actually I very much did answer your question. But you were so intent on blaming the software that you either didn’t read it or chose to bypass it. I will repeat it for you to plainly see.

Yes, there are users who can presently mirror on a 3rd gen. There are also users who can still mirror on a 2nd gen

Nowhere in any of your posts did you provide any concrete evidence, and there are a lot of users on here that know how to interpret diagnostic reports and associated data, but I am not going to continue to debate that with you.

If you want to see if there’s a hardware issue you can easily have it tested by Apple.

There is nothing further to say, you can do what you want with the information that’s been provided. There is no need to respond any further
