Popping sound and buzzing from speakers

I've had my Macbook air for around 2 years now, and recently there is a distinct pop sound whenever audio begins to play, even when the speakers are muted. The pop is followed by this faint buzzing sound that disappears when audio stops playing. The sound comes from the right side of the laptop. I've tried changing the audio balance between left and right, but the buzzing sound is still there. I have no problems when I have headphones plugged in. Any help?

Hi Sean_YYL,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities with your issue today. As I am understanding, you hear a buzzing through your speakers, but not headphones. Since this is the case, there is very likely a hardware issue with the MacBook Air speakers. You can verify this by checking in a new user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

If the issue continues in the new user, I'd advise contacting support for service.

Have a fantastic day!
