4K MKV playback?

I have some 4K files in mkv fioe format on my 2011 Macbook Air. They have becoe associated with Quicktime. 1 do I have to unassiciate them with Quicktime, if so how, and what program is a quality 4K one to associate them with. The only way I can see them in 4K is via Chromecast Ultra...I believe. What should I do so they’re not dongraded to 1080p? I thought I could airplay them on my Apple tv 4K but think I’m only getting 1080p playback. Please help if you can. Thank you so much for taking time to help me. I plan to try using a google chromecast ultra and dragging the files onto the browser and click cast to my Chromecast ultra but want to ensure that the files haven’t been down converted when I click playback. I honestly thank those who help me out cuz I’m worried I wasted my money. If there are steps to unassociste tge file with Quicktime....but the file appears with a Quicktime symbol. What do I do so that Chromecast will play them in 4K? Though my Apple tv 4K would plsy them in 4K but only 1080p.

AirPlay Screen Mirroring is limited to HD 1080p. I think you noticed the downsampling correctly.

How to AirPlay video and mirror your device's screen to Apple TV - Apple Support

QuickTime Player is not a suitable player for MKV content.

You can change the default associated application for that suffix through the Get Info window. First change the Open With application for that file, then second Change All to apply that to all files with that suffix (that do not have custom Open With association).

Mac media players, like VLC or IINA, are better suited for MKV.

Apple TV media players, like Plex, Infuse, or VLC, may be able to connect to disks on your computer to play MKVs from there.

Remuxers like Subler may be able to repack MKV content into a QuickTime/iTunes compatible/friendly MP4, making the media files fit for ‘basic’ AirPlay and iTunes Home Sharing.
