iPhone XR - Black Screen and unresponsive

This morning my iPhone XR that I purchased one month ago, locked up while in my pocket. I took it out and the display was black, no response to any button pushes.

I chatted with support and they informed me of the procedure to force restart the devices made since iPhone 8:

  1. Press and release volume up button
  2. Press and release volume down button
  3. Press and hold side button until device restarts

It's a bit frustrating to have to do this, but I'll make sure to keep a note of this new procedure for forced reboot and to keep track of this issue if it happens again.

As a follow up, support seems to only be offering the suggestion to factory restore the device as new and trial it for 24 hours. Not sure how this helps, but I see that a lot of people are seeing this issue.

What that does is rule out any issues with third party software you've installed. It's more of a diagnostic than a cure.

Definitely agree! Since restoring as new, I haven't had (yet) the issue. But I'm not convinced just yet. So I am going to keep using the phone as is. I reinstalled all my apps already and still haven't seen the issue. Hopefully it will have fixed it for good. Having an unresponsive phone is a nightmare. I almost wonder if it is some underlying setting left over from when I still had a home button.
