Background render bug - freezes machine when trying to use it

I've seen other reports of this exact issue in the past, though few and far between, e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4890706

I've been using FCPX without trouble for months, but just yesterday background rendering started causing an issue. I've set it to 5 seconds, but if I let it kick in by not moving the mouse, it won't stop rendering when I do come back to the machine and move the mouse.

This freezes the entire machine for 10 second jumps at a time. I can click something but it won't respond for 10 seconds, then I get a little bit of response, then it freezes again for 10 seconds. Machine unusable.

I turned off bg render and everything works beautifully. But I like that feature! I'd like on as designed.

I've done a hard reboot and the usual things.

Is there anything else I can try? Some sort of repair function? Though I believe this is a bug.

I have the latest updates 10.4.5.

Apart from switching background render off, try resetting the FCP X preferences.

Hold Option-Command as you launch FCP X.

Also please provide specs of you FCP X version and OS version.

The type of clips in use and Project Properties.

It appears that most problems with rendering and third party plugins that are seen in 2017-2018 machines with integrated GPU are solved in coming 10.14.4. You could install the latest beta on a separate drive and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info.

BTW: best not to show the serial number.

Your Mac should be able a reasonable edit machine.

The type of clips and Project may play a part in the slowness issue.

Can you tell us the clip properties and the Project properties the clips are edited into.

Also where are the clips stored?

If externally, what type of drive and connections?

How do I install the beta? I can't find it.

There are definitive posts in the other thread saying it is *not* third party plugins but any plugins like titles or light effects, even stock Apple ones. This has been my experience also.

Tom, it appears that the problem is with specific machines, such as 2016 and 2017 (and 2018?) macs with integrated graphics.

Is this a 2018 Air?

If I reset preferences, won't I lose my preferences in particular my custom keyboard shortcuts? :/

As I said above, I have the latest updates 10.4.5.

Running latest Mojave on MacBook Pro 13" 2018.

The problem clips seem to be using the Bokeh effect or a title that has light sparks on it. Basically lighting effects. These were never a problem for the past year until today and I use them every week or 2 in new projects.

Do I need to worry about my GPU settings when using a MacBook?
