Night shift on third party displays

When night shift was added in high sierra, this just worked on my AOC display. Since Mojave this is no longer allowed apparently as shown in the help page on Apple.

When I try to activate night shift the AOC screen adjusts and within a second goes

back to regular view (fyi, my macbook stays in night shift mode).

Why does Apple do that? Is it to motivate me to buy that overpriced LG display? Because if that is the case, it won't work.

Please Apple help me to understand this move!
