restoring sound on Mail

I don't know what specific actions you have already taken, but have you gone to the "Notifications" prefs pane in the "System Preferences" app, and verified that in the settings for the Mail app, the option "Play sound for notifications" is enabled?

I also imagine that on the "General" tab in Mail's own preferences window, you have already verified that the "New messages sound" option is not set to "none", and the option "Play sounds for other mail actions" is enabled as well.

See the steps under "Customize alerts or turn them off" here Use Notifications on your Mac - Apple Support to make sure notifications are enabled for Mail. Also if you open the Mail app, click Mail > Preferences > General and make sure that "Play sounds for other mail actions" is toggled on here.
