Help! Time lapse loading forever

I have taken time lapses a few times on my iPhone XR and so far the time lapse has been stuck on loading after I have completed the time lapse. This has happened twice now out of the few times I have used it.


Now I cannot trust the time lapse feature as I lose all the footage because it can’t be used. Is there a fix for this?

Same issue here, taking time lapses intermittently results in a video which stays on the “Loading” screen forever (as in sample screenshot from OP).

  • iPhone XR
  • iOS 12.2
  • seems to happen more often on longer time lapses

Apple support ran hardware diagnostics on my phone which were fine, next step suggested a factory restore and see if it still happens. If it does, next step would be an Apple Store appointment. If it doesn’t, I set up my phone as new.

I haven’t done this yet since it is a huge time sink and pain in my a#%^, still looking for a solution online. But in the 7 months I’ve had this XR the only usable time lapses have been ones where I’m doing a test to see if it will ever work. Every time I try to take a “real” one, it has failed me.

Yup: I filmed a bunch of clips while in India this past week, and same deal. While I love the convenience of my iPhone camera over my Sony full-frame, the unreliability of such videos (even the non-timelapse ones!) makes it hard to trust for keeping my memories and once-in-lifetime trips ...


Where's the channel to actually reach Apple feedback? We should be submitting feedback there, since they don't monitor these community discussions.

So I am having the exact same issue. I downloaded the Apple Support App on my iPhone and found a chat option.


I do not have a fix yet, but they did some basic troubleshooting which may work for some. One was to connect your phone to your computer over USB (I haven’t done that in years since I sync everything over wifi) and found the file on my phone. I tried to transfer it over to my computer, but it errored again. What this means is it is still trying to process the video into a timelapse video on my phone. It has not tried to sync the file to any cloud platform.


what this meant is it is now above the pay grade of the basic phone support people. They have now escalated it to their Creative Media area and gave me a business hours phone number.


not a fix, but positive steps in the right direction I guess?!

Same problem, iPhone 11 Pro Max running on iOS 13.3.

Short time lapses are fine but longer ones are just stuck in an infinite loading. I tried different settings but nothing works for the rear camera.

Everything seems to be ok when using the front camera though... I have recorded less than 1 minute long footage (time lapse time) and it works as it should. It might be the solution until Apple fixes this issue.

I had (have) the same problem. Once it was fixed. Do not know if it was occasional. I shot a long timelapse on New Year market and it showed me preview and conxstant "loading..." on it. I thought it is because of long timelapse and high resolution. But one hour later it was the same. "Googled" it but no luck. Swithcing off and on did not give any result. I was ready to cry holdimg my phone with this stupid "loading..." while standing in the shop. Bought some food fo NY and while looking at this "loading..." message I've paid using double click on power button and face id identification. Did not switch from timelapse preview. And in magical way just after payment, preview got "unfrozen", "loading..." message gone and I got working timelapse.


Not sure if it was coincidence, but maybe not. Thought it would be good if it helps someone else.

p.s. It was on iphone 11 pro 256.

So I’ve gone to yet another country for holiday and took another time lapse today. The same thing has happened again!


This is disgraceful service. For a brand new IPhone 11 Pro 512GB. At least tell us that you’re working on a solution Apple?


P.S. Has anyone tried transferring the time lapse to their computer and seeing if it works then?

I’ve tried it and it was a waste of time. I know that Apple doesn’t monitor these forums (or that’s at least what they say), so I’ve submitted feedback through their online feedback form, but have yet to get a response from them.


Someone recently said they had one of their time lapse videos to process when they happened to have the video up and then used Apple Pay. They said it could have been happenstance, but at this rate it’s worth a shot. I just keep forgetting to try that when I intend to use Apple Pay. Going to make a concerted to effort to see if that’s some weird fix.
