Schiit Modi DAC not showing up in OSX Mojave? Check your cable.
Hi everyone, in response to other posts I have seen here describing this problem, I thought I would tell you my recent experience with the Modi 3.
I had a Schitt Magni 2 headphone amp, and recently decided to buy the matching Modi 3 DAC. When I used the supplied USB A > USB-Micro cable, I could not get the Modi 3 to be recognized by my Mac Pro. I tried every USB port on the Mac Pro, and even tried connecting through my external USB 3.0 hub (which provides full power on all ports). In all cases, the light on the Modi turned on, so I knew it had enough power, but it was not communicating with OSX Mojave, not showing up in the System Information utility under USB devices, or in the AudioMIDISetup utility.
I was about to send a message to Schitt to ask for help, when I thought I would try one last thing: a different USB cable. THAT was the problem. The cable supplied by Schitt was bad. Once a new cable was connected, the Modi showed up in OSX as 'Schitt Modi 3' under USB devices, and communicated successfully with all apps.
So for others experiencing this problem, first check your cable. AND make sure the cable is inserted fully in the jack on the back of the Modi, which seems to be not the best quality connection.
Regarding people that have had problems with using the older Modi and Modi 2 models with OSX Mojave, maybe Schitt has corrected an issue with the firmware when they released the Modi 3 that has resolved the comm issues. All I know is that, thankfully, mine started working once the cable was replaced.
