Personally, I would never, ever not use a screen protector on my phone. There are a lot of very good ones out there that are crystal clear and work fine with touch. I too, have been saved when I dropped mine face down on the garage floor from waist height. Scratches, a couple of nicks, and a small crack in the tempered glass protector--phone screen completely undamaged. I also use a case. Every phone that I've had was in perfect condition at trade-in.

Also, there seem to be a lot of complaints on the web that the XS screen scratches more easily than predecessors. Anecdotal yes, but quite a number of people who never have used screen protectors and had no scratches are experiencing both microscratches and deep scratches on their XS phones.

For something that gets handled as much as a smartphone, I wouldn't use one without a protector. Which one you get can make quite a difference on how it looks. If you want to hide it as much as possible, get one with a glossy surface so your phone looks the same after applying it.

I just put this brand on my iPhone 6s. One of the best I've tried. None are all that easy to apply (air bubbles and dust to contend with no matter the brand), but this one went on easier than other types I've tried. It even comes with a microfiber cloth and stiff application card to burnish out air bubbles (you first wrap the cloth around the card).

I didn't check to see if they have a protector to fit an XS, but I would imagine they do. One thing I looked for in particular (like the one I linked to), is that it's NOT a glass protector. I can't see anyone would want to put a thin, breakable object on your phone's screen. That's the main complaint you see for them. They break easily, and often.
