Login failed
Suddenly, there is a "login failed" message on the top right of my mail (I have a gmail account.) I am online. I keyed in the correct password. How do I fix this?

Eric . . . figured it out but don't understand why. I logged on to AOL webmail>Accounts?Account security and ticked the "Allow apps that use less secure sign-in" to on. Both iPad and iMac AOL internet accounts were able to reload and connect to the server. Amazing . . . it only took 2 hours and a headache to find the solution that I don't get. Apple Mail is "less secure?"
Rod Miller, I checked my AOL e-mail account security and lo and behold "Allow apps that use less secure sign-in" was already set to on! So I'm still getting "Login failed" and having to click on it to manually reset it. Mmmmmm.........
Hi Stephen . . . it is very frustrating. Due to a hack of my AOL account last week, I deleted all AOL internet accounts and added AOL back to my two MBP's and two iPhones - no problem. I was unable to reload AOL on my iPad and iMac until I ticked ON the " . . . less secure sign-in." That is likely because my iPad and iMac have older OSX and iOS, firmware, etc. I have a scheduled phone appointment with Apple Support on Wednesday after their engineers has finish reviewing the problem. I'll post the results here. Rod
Update: After a lengthy exchange, AOL has concluded this is an Apple problem. I reported Apple Support's observation that this happens only with AOL mail accounts, none of the others. Didn’t matter. The number of AOL users having this problem and reporting it to Apple is growing. It has advanced to the engineering department who hoped the 10.14.5 update would fixed it - it did not. I have a committed support advisor who is determined to get an answer. I have submitted (twice) Connection Doctor logs, “sudo sysdiagnose Mail” terminal logs, video captures and total system ACCD diagnostics. I am waiting to hear back (again) after the engineers evaluate the last data I submitted. I’ll post the end result. Rod
Rod Miller: Update. I have good news to report. Since MacOS update Mojave 10.14.5, several days ago, my e-mail system on my MacBook Pro 15" 2015 has sorted itself. It has been several days now and "Login failed" does not appear any longer! I now see "Connection Logging Enabled" constantly, at the top of the e-mail browser. After several years of "Login Failed" I can hardly believe it!
I wish I had the same luck with the upgrade but I did not. The problem persists, as well as more frequent failure to connect to the outgoing server.
Maybe Eric can weigh in on this: I suggest you turn off "Log Connection Activity" because it is logging all your mail connections. My Apple advisor had me turn it on to capture the error. After I submitted it, he had me turn it off immediately and delete the files (Connection Doctor>Show Logs> then drag them to the trash). This can be a very large file and consume your memory. Eventually, it will cause operating problems. I'll pass on your experience my Apple advisor and will post the results if/when the problem is resolved. Thanks!
Are you trying to log into your Apple ID or an email account?
The mail account won't let me log in with any password. It is stuck on "login failed." I can't log in at all. (I originally tried to log in, as usual, with my gmail password.)
I tried deleting the account (lost some email) and adding it back, and it didn't work. The same message, login failed, is there.
If you go to the Gmail web site, can you log in there?
Yes, but not on my Mac email.
You are welcome. Thanks for the feedback.
Eric . . . do I need to delete this on Pastebin or does it time out? Thanks!
I would run it again so it is current.
