Have you tried quitting/reopening Mail? Try in the Safe Mode and see if it does the same thing.
If it still isn't working, select the account's mailbox(es), then Mail/Mailbox/Export mailbox to create a backup of your emails. Delete the account and add it back.
You are welcome.

You might want to consider replacing your battery soon. I have purchased RAM several times, a MacBook Pro battery, and 2 hard drives from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the battery.
Thanks Eric . . . I'll let you know if the Failed login goes away. I suspect it will not but I'll live with it. More interesting is why is appears on only 1 of 5 Apple devices that file share the AOL account. Maybe AOL will reply to my email inquiry. If you come up with another fix, please get back to me.
When I uninstalled Symantec, it uninstalled the entire Norton Security program that came free with our Comcast internet service (https://www.xfinity.com/hub/internet/internet-security). In the past, it has caught many risks and fixed them So am I now without any antiviral application? I have the free version of Malwarebytes that I run periodically but it is not live. Is this going to be a problem for me? Does System Integrity Protection (enabled) protect against viruses, etc.?
You are welcome. There are no known Mac viruses at this time. I don't know what Norton was fixing, but anti-virus programs do produce false positives. I haven't run an anti-virus program on any Mac I've owned or any OS I've had installed and I've never had any problems. System Integrity Protection (enabled) does help protect the Mac against virus and other things.
Thanks again Eric . . . I appreciate your experience and insight about viruses and the Mac. I remember Norton using the term "suspicious malware" or my computer being "at risk" and running the "Fix" program. When I've run Malwarebytes (free version), it never came up with anything, Threat Scan Result - clean. I'll post back in a week or two and let you know if this login problem continues. If it does, are you suggesting there is likely nothing more that can be done? I can live with the inconvenience. It's just puzzling . . . Rod
You are welcome. I don't know what else to suggest. As I posted earlier, I use AOL email and sometimes see the same error(s). If I ignore it, it usually goes away. I tend to think it is an AOL problem.
Eric: I received a lengthy reply from AOL Support which essentially recommends deleting the account and adding it back, which I have done. They also suggest mannually setting up the account using Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings. I cannot find my Server Settings. They do not appear where Apple Support articles and internet searches suggest. Here's what mine look like:
I"m also asked for information I can find, i.e. ports, servers, etc. There is some discussion online that server options may be different based on the type of email account you're using, i.e. IMAP, POP, iCloud, Microsoft Exchange. I believe the email from AOL Support is too large to copy and paste here.
So, a few questions:
Here are my Internet Accounts:
This is getting complicated and detailed. Would you be willing to communicate directly by email so I can share information privately? Thanks Eric, Rod
You are welcome.
In your first screen shot where it shows Outgoing Mail Account, click on the double arrows on the right side of AOL. That should give you a dropdown menu with an Edit SMTP Server List option. Click that. Select the account and you should be able to check/set ports and other information.
The accounts and settings should be the same on all devices/computers.
Having an AOL account and an iCloud account active at the same time shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks Eric . . . I have tried this suggestion to edit the server list:
I get nothing even though I have select the AOL account before clicking Server Settings. I have exhaused all Mail and System Preference options to locate server/port information and can find none. Where are they? I could access all of this before Mojave. Hmmm . . .
Is there an issue with the iCloud keychain or iCloud drive?
I asked about communicating directly and more privately . . . is Dropbox an option? eMail?
Thanks Eric . . . no problem regarding private communication - totally understand. I'll work on this some more and let you know how/if it's resolved, or if AOL comes up with an explanation and solution. Thanks for the links . . .
Eric: could you help me with this? Twice now the AOL Support insists on the following before it can problem solve the "Failed Login" issue with Mac Mail (which is getting worse and now includes an "Account Error" message):
In order to isolate if this is an issue with the third party email application or with AOL account, we need to see the ports and the servers you've used. If you cannot see the ports or servers, we advise you contact Apple customer service to get help with your issue.
I have searched, Googled and looked at Support Communities and Articles. I cannot find how to access the ports or servers for my AOL account. I have viewed them before I upgraded to Mojave. I suspect Mojave Mail automatically sets up the AOL internet account so it may no longer show you the settings. I can enter new settings when I use "Edit SMTP Server List" but can not see any of the existing information:
Thanks you Eric!
I forgot to tell you Eric that I read all of the information on the three websites you provided me, a couple of times: AOL Settings, AOL to Mail and AOL to Mail 2. They provide good information but none address the problem that I cannot locate the existing ports and servers on my MBP/Mojave. All sites say to go to Mail Preferences>Accounts>Server Information. There's nothing there. If you've exhausted possibilities, I'll call Apple Support and pay them to (hopefully) help. I appreciate all the time you've given to this. Thank you. Rod
Rod Miller, I have very similar problems, on a 2015 MacBook Pro 15". I notice from your later postings that you seem to use an Aol account. I do too. I wonder is there an Aol connection here. I have not been able to solve the problem for about three years now. :(
Hi Stephen. Sorry you too are experiencing this. So far, I've not resolved it. AOL support essentially is pointing the finger at Apple. I haven't gone to Apple Support because it's for pay. AOL support gave me these sites to explore. I did. They either dont' apply or don't work but you can check them out as well. If they have a fix, I'll post it here. Rod

(I posted this reply earlier but doesn't appear here.) That's the problem I tried explaining ERic. There is no information on the page (above screen clipping): Mail Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings>Edit SMPT Server List:
Also, AOL Support sent this today:
We specialize in supporting AOL Mail and related products, since you use the correct ports, tried to reconfigure the app, checked if you use 2 step verification and you have checked for the option "allow apps that use less secure sign in" , this means we cannot provide support related to your issue. We suggest contacting Apple customer support to get help with your concern.
So, the finger is pointing to Apple. I may have to pay them to find out what's going on. Frustrating. I'll wait for your reply Eric before calling Apple just in case you have some other idea what's going on. Thanks again! Rod
Eric: Failed Login update. I'm having intense phone conversations, screen sharing, submitting system logs and making video's of the problem with Apple Support. They are very interested and helpful but I'm predicting they will point the finger back at AOL. I'll let you. It has now been submitted to the engineers.
I had a major hack into my AOL account this week through a phishing scam using Dropbox. I two Dropbox accounts, one linked to AOL and another to Yahoo. I, and Dropbox Support, are trying to figure out if the scam orginated through an emal account or Dropbox, or both. I believe my Contacts were stolen and 180+ emails were attempted. About 30 made it through to friends and famiy before I (hopefully) stopped them by changing all passwords associated with AOL, Yahoo and Dropbox. I'm still working on it and helping friends and family who fell for the scam as well. One friend (with a PC) called immediately and said all of his Norton Security alerts and alarms went crazy telling him to run from the email. I am now wondering if uninstalling Norton Systematic was the right thing to do. Should I reinstall it? I ran Malwarebytes and it said my computer was clean. Rod
