MPEG Streamclip not showing Apple ProRes 422 HQ

March 24, 2019

Mac Mini 2018. Mojave (10.14.1)

MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b8

Apple ProRes formats are not showing up in my options. Any idea why?

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

I figured it out.

It was not obvious to me that the ProRes codecs are not readily available. Even on a brand new Mac Mini 2018, the codecs were not pre-installed. You generally have to buy some kind of pro Apple software to obtain the codecs. After you do that, then MPEG Streamclip will "see" that you have these codecs installed, and will offer them as an option.

Yes you have to have installed a suitable Apple pro app to get the ProRes codec.

MPEGStreamClip is long discontinued, both the Mac version and the Windows version use 'classic' QuickTime. Classic QuickTime (not its official name but cognoscenti should know what I mean) was discontinued for Windows in 2016, rumours are that it will be discontinued for Mac this year when the next version of macOS is released.

So, you would then only be able to run MPEGStreamclip via an older version of macOS.

I still use MPEGStreamClip occasionally myself, it is great for editing both MPEG2 files and even MPEG4 aka H.264 files, it can do so without having to re-encode the video unlike Apple's own tools.

I would not be too surprised if QuickTime Player also got discontinued, whilst it often has smoother playback than VLC it is otherwise far less useful.

Yes it is old but this is the newest version as far as I know. And my searches all indicate that everyone else seems to have no problem with Apple ProRess on MPEG Streamclip. Even I have no problem with it when I use my work-computer. This is my home-computer, which is much newer.

I downloaded the older version of MPEG Streamclip and it has the same problem.
